The author highlights the three main aspects of Shi'a Islam: its historical development, especially the history of the Imams; the rituals, including flagellation and passion plays; and the rule of the mullahs, known as the "government of experts." Shi'ism is as old as Islam. It began as an exclusively Arab political issue of succession to Muhammad, and was later embraced by the Iranians. At the core of Shi'i religious practice are rituals of mourning and atonement.--Publisher description.

What does jihad really mean? What is the Muslim conception of law? What is Islam's stance toward unbelievers? Probing literary and historical sources, Bernard Lewis traces the development of Islamic political language from the time of the Prophet to the present. His analysis of documents written in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish illuminates differences between Muslim political thinking and Western political theory, and clarifies the perception, discussion, and practices of politics in the Islamic world. "Lewis's own style, combining erudition with a simple elegance and subtle humor, continues to inspire. In an era of specialization and narrowing academic vision, he stands alone as one who deserves, without qualification, the title of historian of Islam."—Martin Kramer, Middle East Review "A superb effort at synthesis that presents all the relevant facts of Middle Eastern history in an eminently lucid form. . . . It is a book that should prove both rewarding and congenial to the Muslim reader."—S. Parvez Manzor, Muslim World Book Review "By bringing his thoughts together in this clear, concise and readable account, [Lewis] has placed in his debt scholars and all who seek to understand the Muslim world."—Ann K. S. Lambton, Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies "[Lewis] constructs a fascinating account of the ways in which Muslims have conceived of the relations between ruler and ruled, rights and duties, legitimacy and illegitimacy, obedience and rebellion, justice and oppression. And he shows how changes in political attitudes and concepts can be traced through changes in the political vocabulary."—Shaul Bakhash, New York Review of Books

Making Muslim Space In North America And Europe written by Barbara Daly Metcalf and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-28 with Religion categories.

Focusing on the private and public use of space, this volume explores the religious life of the new Muslim communities in North America and Europe. Unlike most studies of immigrant groups, these essays concentrate on cultural practices and expressions of everyday life rather than on the political issues that dominate today's headlines. The authors emphasize the cultural strength and creativity of communities that draw upon Islamic symbols and practices to define "Muslim space" against the background of a non-Muslim environment. The range of perspectives is broad, encompassing middle-class professionals, mosque congregations, factory workers in France and the north of England, itinerant African traders, and prison inmates in New York. The truism that "Islam is a religion of the word" takes on concrete meaning as these disparate communities find ways to elaborate word-centered ritual and to have the visual and aural presence of sacred words in the spaces they inhabit. The volume includes 46 black-and-white photographs that illustrate Muslim populations in Edmonton, Philadelphia, the Green Haven Correction Facility, Manhattan, Marseilles, Berlin, and London, among other places. The focus on space directs attention to the new kinds of boundaries and consciousness that exist not only for these Muslim populations, but for people from all backgrounds in today's ever more integrated world. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1997. Situating Globalization written by Cynthia Nelson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Business & Economics categories.

The range of perspectives and original materials dealt with here highlights the renewed urgency of the struggle for cultural autonomy and voice within the context of globalization. Each author explores how the various processes at both the local and global levels intersect to create new discourses and debates around the "indigenization of knowledge." If a new wind of cultural decolonization is blowing through the Arab Middle East and is having profound impact on the lives of men and women, then we should expect a new scholarship to emerge in order to grasp it. This book is a contribution in that direction. A key dimension concerns the issue of borders and boundaries. These are both real and imaginary (i.e., symbolic and metaphoric), hegemonic and counter-hegemonic. Among these borders are spatial ones that determine individuals' and communities' everyday location and place in the world--these include boundaries of class, gender, territory, and language. Each of these separations in turn has embedded in it, and rests on constructions of "imaginary" borders and boundaries. The real and imaginary do not exist as two disparate entities but are inextricably linked to each other in a dialectical move that simultaneously enables and disables movement and action. Current re-visioning of globalization challenges past suppositions. Globalization is a new form of an ongoing process that took inception during the heyday of colonialism. It might serve as a descriptive term to articulate the current historical period, but it remains theoretically problematic and imprecise. Situating Globalization picks up on the problematics of power and its dispersal and concentration. The bearers of these cultural flows seek legitimacy from their potential constituency by positing their language--cultural and religious--as local and therefore inherently in opposition to the hegemonic cultural knowledge that has seeped in from "outside" and led to disempowerment of local "peoples" and "knowledges." Bearers make no mention to this Islamist knowledge, of the "foreignness" of this idiom to many within the societies in question. Any attempt to contest their positioning and bearers of the indigenous results in charges of either betrayal or brainwashing. Cynthia Nelson is professor of anthropology and dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Sarah Lawrence College. She is author of Doria Shafik, Egyptian Feminist: A Woman Apart. Shahnaz Rouse is a member of its sociology faculty. Her research interests and publications cover agrarian transformation; social movements; the state, religion and gender identity.
