Long Beach State grew up right along with the sprawling Southern California suburbs. Born in 1949, it swelled to accommodate the post-world war enthusiasm for education and land. The rapid expansion brought its share of growing pains. Students took classes in a cramped converted apartment with no books and playing ring-around-the-rosie for physical education. Money was scarce, and faculty at times feuded with the administration. But the new college's "let's put on a show" spirit produced a scrappiness that endures today. Read about the personalities that grew the college from Fred Bixby's bean fields into one of the largest universities in California.

Higher education today faces a host of challenges, from quality to cost. But too little attention gets paid to a startling fact: four out of ten students -- that's more than ten percent of the entire population - -who start college drop out. The situation is particularly dire for black and Latino students, those from poor families, and those who are first in their families to attend college. In The College Dropout Scandal, David Kirp outlines the scale of the problem and shows that it's fixable - -we already have the tools to boost graduation rates and shrink the achievement gap. Many college administrators know what has to be done, but many of them are not doing the job - -the dropout rate hasn't decreased for decades. It's not elite schools like Harvard or Williams who are setting the example, but places like City University of New York and Long Beach State, which are doing the hard work to assure that more students have a better education and a diploma. As in his New York Times columns, Kirp relies on vivid, on-the-ground reporting, conversations with campus leaders, faculty and students, as well as cogent overviews of cutting-edge research to identify the institutional reforms--like using big data to quickly identify at-risk students and get them the support they need -- and the behavioral strategies -- from nudges to mindset changes - -that have been proven to work. Through engaging stories that shine a light on an underappreciated problem in colleges today, David Kirp's hopeful book will prompt colleges to make student success a top priority and push more students across the finish line, keeping their hopes of achieving the American Dream alive.

The first students registered for college at a strawberry stand by the side of the road. Early classes were held in the dining rooms of under-construction apartments. Such was the humble beginning of a little college in Long Beach that 75 years later boasts a large student body and one of the highest application rates in the country. Long Beach State began in 1949 with the registration of 169 students, most of them at a strawberry stand on Pacific Coast Highway. Students in those early days were returning WWII veterans, housewives, and people who longed to go to college but couldn't manage to attend USC or UCLA. Seventy-five years later, California State University, Long Beach is now home to close to 40,000 students and regularly tops national surveys for its promotion of social mobility. Long Beach State at 75 is a distinctive photo history that chronicles the college's founding, its explosive expansion, and its growing pains and adventures along the way. Each decade is richly sprinkled with photos and text spotlighting that decade's own unique ambience and cultural significance. We hear from students who followed the football team in the 1950s, marched on campus in the 1960s, watched Jefferson Airplane on Hard Fact Hill in the 1970s, and those who sweated through games at the Gold Mine and endured COVID lockdowns. Vignettes on students who went on to fame, such as Steve Martin, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band co-founder John McEuen, the Carpenters, and Steven Spielberg (who returned to graduate in 2002) are interspersed with interviews with students from varied backgrounds and those who played important roles in making the college what it is today. A grad student's risqué art project that led to massive demonstrations, the scramble to build the Walter Pyramid, the uphill fight to establish women's sports on campus, and battles over faculty governance, sacred land, and women's studies all form part of Long Beach State's fascinating story. Vintage photos and a modern, fresh look with a nostalgic nod to sleek sixties design make this coffee table book destined to find a coveted place in many settings. Whether you're an alum, a "49er," a "Shark," or a student of California history, Long Beach State at 75 is a book for everyone. Barbara Kingsley-Wilson is a full-time lecturer and media advisor at Cal State Long Beach. Before coming to CSULB in 2004, she was a journalist for 20 years, covering courts, crime, education, and sports for newspapers in the Midwest and Upstate New York, Southern California, and with USA Today. She spent the summer of 1995 in Amman, Jordan, interviewing women and government officials as part of a grant to study women and sports. She has won awards from the Associated Press, Orange County and Los Angeles press clubs, and contributed stories to the Orange County Register's Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of a fertility scandal. Her book Long Beach State: A Brief History, was published in 2015. In addition to teaching, she is a freelance writer and certified yoga instructor who enjoys biking and nerding out on local history. She lives in Long Beach with her family.

The National Center for Education Statistics has predicted that some 2.4 million new teachers will be needed by 2008-09 because of teacher attrition and retirement, and increased student enrollment. The projections indicate the importance of offering information to prospective students, and their counselors, who are interested in entering teacher education programs. For this reason, the ACE/Praeger Series on Higher Education, with the participation of the AACTE (American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education), has provided the most up-to-date and comprehensive information available on teacher education programs in U.S. colleges and universities. Projections by the National Center for Education Statistics, indicating a large and growing need for new teachers later in this decade, make it clear that offering information to prospective teacher education students, and their counselors, is a very important service to the field of education. ACE, with the participation of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, has produced the most comprehensive directory in this area. Arranged by state, and then alphabetically by institution, the information is the result of data collected both by questionnaire and by additional research online and from the National Center for Education Statistics, from over 800 teacher education programs across the country. In addition to all of the basic information about the undergraduate programs--including certification, admission requirements, institution and program descriptions, licensure, financial information and financial aid--the directory offers information for those programs that offer graduate degrees in teacher education.
