Originally published in 1915, when Jennings Cropper Wise was commandant of the Virginia Military Institute, The Long Arm of Lee has never been surpassed as an authoritative study of the Confederate artillery in the Civil War. Volume I describes the organization and tactics of the field batteries of General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and their performance in famous battles, including those at Bull Run, Malvern Hill, Cedar Mountain, Harper's Ferry, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg. It ends with the bitter winter interlude before the Chancellorsville campaign of the spring of 1863. Volume 2 of Wise's history, also available as a Bison Book, takes up the harrowing events stretching from Chancellorsville to Appomattox. In his introduction, Gary W. Gallagher addresses some of the myths exposed by Wise, touching on the persistent under-estimation of the artillery's role in winning battles.

For the past four decades, the United States was victimized by both domestic and international terrorism. The September 11, 2001 brutal attacks were the most devastating terrorist acts ever recorded in history. The United States federal legal responses to the challenge of terrorism constitute a substantial and far ranging body of statutory law. The materials included in this volume are the most important laws that concern the threat of terrorism. Many of these laws are part of the general criminal and civil laws of the United States and apply to various forms of criminal and civil activity, including, but not limited, to terrorism. The book also incorporated the latest legislation, the U.S.A. Patriot Act of 2001, signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 26, 2001. Terrorism-related topics include aliens and nationality; armed forces; crimes and criminal procedure; aviation; biological and chemical weapons; foreign relations, antiterrorism assistance, diplomatic security, judiciary and judicial procedure; shipping; transportation; and war and national defense.

The Long Arm Of Moore S Law written by Cyrus C. M. Mody and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-09 with Technology & Engineering categories.

How, beginning in the mid 1960s, the US semiconductor industry helped shape changes in American science, including a new orientation to the short-term and the commercial. Since the mid 1960s, American science has undergone significant changes in the way it is organized, funded, and practiced. These changes include the decline of basic research by corporations; a new orientation toward the short-term and the commercial, with pressure on universities and government labs to participate in the market; and the promotion of interdisciplinarity. In this book, Cyrus Mody argues that the changes in American science that began in the 1960s co-evolved with and were shaped by the needs of the “civilianized” US semiconductor industry. In 1965, Gordon Moore declared that the most profitable number of circuit components that can be crammed on a single silicon chip doubles every year. Mody views “Moore's Law” less as prediction than as self-fulfilling prophecy, pointing to the enormous investments of capital, people, and institutions the semiconductor industry required—the “long arm” of Moore's Law that helped shape all of science. Mody offers a series of case studies in microelectronics that illustrate the reach of Moore's Law. He describes the pressures on Stanford University's electrical engineers during the Vietnam era, IBM's exploration of alternatives to semiconductor technology, the emergence of consortia to integrate research across disciplines and universities, and the interwoven development of the the molecular electronics community and associated academic institutions as the vision of a molecular computer informed the restructuring of research programs.

Legal Path Dependence And The Long Arm Of The Religious State written by Victor Asal and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-12 with Political Science categories.

A comparative examination of the political, historical, legal, and religious antecedents of penalties and discrimination against sexual minority groups around the world. Bringing together theoretical perspectives from both comparative politics and public law, this book examines the reasons why certain countries criminalize same-sex activities while others have carved into law the requirement that sexual minority communities be protected. The authors break new ground by using cross-national yearly data over decades—focusing on sodomy laws, death penalty provisions for same-sex sexual relations, and sexual discrimination practices—to develop a Gay Rights Index comparing treatment of such groups in various parts of the world. The book includes legal and large-N analyses, historical examples, and case studies underscoring important changes and key trends during the last several decades. Also highlighted are the significant human rights violations still being committed in various parts of the world against sexual minorities, and the continuing role religion plays. Victor Asal is Chair of Public Administration and Associate Professor of Political Science at the University at Albany, State University of New York and the coauthor (with Paul G. Harwood) of Educating the First Digital Generation. Udi Sommer is Associate Professor of Political Science at Tel Aviv University and a member of both the Blavatnik Interdisciplinary Cyber Research Center and Israeli Young Academy. He is the author of Supreme Court Agenda Setting: Strategic Behavior During Case Selection.
