Capitalism, Institutions and Social Orders develops a novel political economy approach by establishing a dialogue between the Social Structures of Accumulation (SSA) theory and Ernesto Laclau’s post-Marxism theory. Using this synthesis, it provides an in-depth analysis of Spain’s recent socio-economic evolution since the early 1990s. The book develops a theoretical framework capable of appraising capitalist dynamics together with their relationship to the institutional environment surrounding and structuring them. This is in order to explore the interrelation between the historical development of the capitalist mode of production, on the one hand, and the various co-existing social processes, social consensuses and political identities, on the other. Contemporary Spain provides an interesting case study: until the onset of the Great Recession, Spain had an impressive macroeconomic record supported by several contradictory social processes, such as a massive real estate bubble, an upsurge in private indebtedness and a deteriorating manufacturing sector. However, the accumulation of internal imbalances during those years led inevitably to the sudden disintegration of this institutional and social environment in the years after 2008, thus resulting into a breakdown of capitalist activity accompanied by widespread social contestation. The book also explores the ensuing political scenario, including the emergence of the ‘indignados’ movement and the anti-austerity party Podemos. This work is of significant interest to critical political economy and discourse-theory scholars, critical theorists in general, and social scientists concerned with the recent Spanish experience.

El vértigo de las mutaciones sociales –del catolicismo a la posmodernidad– no dejaban tiempo para preguntarse qué tipo de modernidad necesitábamos. De manera creciente, fue cuajando un paradigma cultural narcisista que hoy sigue vivo y que es compartido por la izquierda y la derecha. Definidos como «una explosión de libertad», fueron también tiempos de censura, competición extrema y amnesia política. Tres décadas después, se pueden valorar mejor las películas de Almodóvar, los tabúes de una revolución sexual con veinte años de retraso y la carga política de palabras como «creatividad», «meritocracia» y «transgresión». Los ochenta impusieron un consumismo pop, una anglofilia con sabor a cena descongelada y una mirada condescendiente sobre cualquier cuestionamiento del mercado. En este sentido, no faltaron casos de apartheids culturales que marginaban los contenidos preferidos por las clases bajas (casi siempre más vivos que los que promocionaba el sistema). En gran medida, las derrotas discursivas y materiales de los ochenta impiden imaginar un futuro mejor. Es hora de pasar revista a los espectros de la Movida.

Es decir, remite tanto a la conciencia como al hacerse cargo de las propias acciones. En lo que sigue, el autor se sirve de dicha expresión como farolillo o linterna con la que orientarse en una doble travesía: de qué pasado venimos... y a qué presente hemos ido a parar. En ese sentido, el ensayo tiene mucho de cuaderno de viajes entre dos momentos de la historia en cuyo contraste, podríamos afirmar que queda dibujado el signo primordial de lo que estamos viviendo. Por otro lado, en ' Dar(se) cuenta' se levanta acta también de una segunda travesía de diferente naturaleza: la llevada a la práctica de la actividad intelectual al compromiso político. La conclusión que se desprende de esta doble travesía es que, en realidad, los dos sentidos de la expresión " dar(se) cuenta", lejos de constituir una curiosa ambigüedad, una mera broma del lenguaje, representan en realidad las dos caras de una misma moneda. O, si se prefiere, que el viaje de la teoría a la práctica tiene camino de vuelta. Y que convocar a la acción nunca pueda ser la última palabra: la última palabra solo puede equivaler a rendir cuentas de lo realizado.
