[...] Magistral. [...] Los alemanes tiene todo para encandilar». Juan Marqué, La Lectura - El Mundo

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION In 1916, during World War I, two ships carrying more than six hundred Germans from Cameroon arrive in Cádiz. They have surrendered to the colonial authorities at the Guinean border as Spain is a neutral country. They will settle, among other places, in Zaragoza and form a small community of people that will never return to Germany. Among them was Eva and Fede's great-grandfather, who, almost a century later, find themselves at the German cemetery in Zaragoza burying their older brother, Gabi. Along with their father, they are the last survivors of the Schuster family, who once built a significant food business. But in current times, the past can always resurface to stir up trouble. With secrecy and conspiracies that grow page by page, Los alemanes / The Germans addresses one of the most shameful and less-publicized episodes in the history of Spain: how the Nazis who sought refuge there in a golden retreat, activated neo-Nazism in Germany. With subtlety, it shines a light on the hell that family can sometimes become and leaves two uncomfortable hanging questions: When do the parents' sins expire? Do the children have an obligation to redeem and liberate them from those sins?

In this “beautifully wrought” novel set in Franco-era Spain, a university student stumbles into a decades-old mystery (New York magazine). It’s the late sixties, the last dark years of Franco’s dictatorship. Minaya, a university student in Madrid, is caught up in the student protests and the police are after him. He moves to his uncle Manuel’s country estate in the small town of Mágina to write his thesis on an old friend of his uncle, an obscure republican poet named Jacinto Solana. The country house is full of traces of the poet—notes, photographs, journals—and Minaya soon discovers that, thirty years earlier, during the Spanish Civil War, both his uncle and Solana were in love with the same woman, the beautiful, unsettling Mariana. Engaged to Manuel, she was shot in the attic of the house on her wedding night. With the aid of Inés, a maid, Minaya begins to search for Solana’s lost masterpiece, a novel called Beatus Ille. Looking for a book, he unravels a crime. One of Spain’s most celebrated literary figures, the author of Sepharad and In the Night of Time weaves a “rapturously gothic” tale that is both a novel of ideas and an intricately plotted mystery (The New York Sun). “A brilliant novel by an important writer unafraid of ideas, emotions and genuine beauty.” —Los Angeles Times “Already a contemporary classic, this work . . . is an enigmatic gem in the very best metafiction tradition.” —Library Journal

Skin is the border of our body and, as such, it is that through which we relate to others but also what separates us from them. Through skin, we speak: when we display it, when we tan it, when we tattoo it, or when we mute it by covering it with clothes. Skin exhibits social relationships, displays power and the effects of power, explains many things about who we are, how others perceive us and how we exist in the world. And when it gets sick, it turns us into monsters. In Skin, Sergio del Molino speaks of these monsters in history and literature, whose lives have been tormented by bad skin: Stalin secretly taking a bath in his dacha, Pablo Escobar getting up late and shutting himself in the shower, Cyndi Lauper performing a commercial for a medicine promising relief from skin disease, John Updike sunburned in the Caribbean, Nabokov writing to his wife from exile, ‘Everything would be fine, if it weren’t for the damned skin.’ As a psoriasis sufferer, Sergio del Molino includes himself in this gallery of monsters through whose stories he delves into the mysteries of skin. What is for some a badge of pride and for others a source of anguish and shame, skin speaks of us and for us when we don’t speak with words.

Fiction. Latino/Latina Studies. Inside the great landfill at Ro Azul, nica and her friends, her family, society's cast-offs, struggle to survive on what those in the city throw away. This story of the "divers" (buzos), the community of Western untouchables who live in landfills and dumps, immediately made Fernando Contreras Castro famous in his native Costa Rica and around Latin America. Now available in English for the first time in Elaine S. Brooks' translation, NICA LOOKING AT THE SEA tells the story of an underclass invisible to the urban bourgeoisie who produce the trash they eke out a living from, a story no less pertinent in the US and the rest of the English-speaking world than it is in Latin America.

A New Scientist Book of the Year Prehistory is all around us. We just need to know where to look. Juan José Millás has always felt like he doesn’t quite fit into human society. Sometimes he wonders if he is even a Homo sapiens at all, or something simpler. Perhaps he is a Neanderthal who somehow survived? So he turns to Juan Luis Arsuaga, one of the world’s leading palaeontologists and a super-smart sapiens, to explain why we are the way we are and where we come from. Over the course of many months, the two visit different places, many of them common scenes of our daily lives, and others unique archaeological sites. Arsuaga tries to teach the Neanderthal how to think like a sapiens and, above all, that prehistory is not a thing of the past: that traces of humanity through the millennia can be found anywhere, from a cave or a landscape to a children’s playground or a toy shop. Millás and Arsuaga invite you on a journey of wonder that unites scientific discovery with the greatest human invention of all: the art of storytelling.
