Este libro parte de la base de que es preciso reemplazar la constitución de 1980 por su origen radical y su arrasamiento de los textos anteriores, algo que es evidente y de amplio consenso, instalando una discusión relacionada a la memoria política y a la hipótesis de la existencia de una cultura chilena de transformaciones graduales. Desde ahí la Constitución de 1925 emergería como un acervo social que emblematiza la tradición institucional rota en 1973 y que, como todo patrimonio, está sujeto a relecturas y re-interpretaciones, pero dentro de una trama que la comunidad va bordando en el ritual de la inclusión que provee el relato de la democracia. El mensaje del libro pareciera ser un esfuerzo y un llamado a exorcizar el fantasma de la violencia fundante de la Constitución de 1980 para elaborar un punto de vista que nos lleve a “evitar el inmovilismo y la radicalización”, a superar los opuestos de la Mistral, a esos “abismos que separan a las gentes nuestras” y, agreguemos, al deseo de realizar un aporte contundente contra la tendencia a los facilismos no reflexivos que nos asisten cada vez con mayor fuerza. Sin duda, las complejas tramas que tejen los nuevos sujetos sociales y su reclamo de reconocimiento deberían encontrar un lugar en esa relectura constitucionalista: las definiciones de la comunidad imaginada como pluricultural, intercultural o plurinacional, por ejemplo, o los derechos sexuales y reproductivos, a la educación, a la salud, a las pensiones, por mencionar temas acuciantes, y así podríamos seguir enumerando el enorme vacío del texto constitucional que nos rige. Sin duda, la interpelación que nos hace este libro contribuye a reabrir el ritual suspendido sobre el cambio constitucional, a continuar con el debate no zanjado que late en lo profundo de Chile, reuniendo lo viejo y lo nuevo, la tradición y sus recreaciones, en palabras de Mistral “para unir, aunque sea a medias a los opuestos”.
