En seis décadas de existencia, el peronismo ha virado a la centroizquierda, a la centroderecha y a la derecha, ha cobijado a los Montoneros y a la Triple A, ha sido un férreo defensor del Estado de bienestar y también lo ha desmontado. Al cabo de este devenir, y sin excluir nuevas mutaciones en el futuro, sobresale una pregunta: ¿qué es finalmente el peronismo? ¿Qué ha sucedido con la política argentina desde su aparición? Pocos libros han logrado dar una respuesta tan clara, vigente y definitiva a este interrogante como Los cuatro peronismos, de Alejandro Horowicz. En la historia política de la Argentina no hay hecho más trascendente que la aparición y transformación del peronismo. Desde el 17 de octubre de 1945 hasta la actualidad ha gravitado, y no pocas veces ha pautado, los acontecimientos del país. En su primera década en el poder, hasta 1955, incorporó a la vida política activa a grandes masas obreras, y redefinió el lugar, e incluso el idearlo, de los partidos entonces dominantes. Después de la llamada Revolución Libertadora, y hasta 1973, proscrito y con Perón, en el exilio, fue a menudo el árbitro y la baza que inclinaba la balanza de los gobiernos civiles y militares. Desde 1973 hasta 1976, con las presidencias de Cámpora, Perón y al final Isabel Perón, gobernó en medio de las mayores expectativas y fue el campo de batalla donde se midieron la izquierda y la derecha peronista. Y a la vez descubrió que sus clásicas recetas económicas no eran viables en un país que había virado radicalmente.

In the first English-language survey of Argentine-U.S. relations to appear in more than a decade, David M. K. Sheinin challenges the accepted view that confrontation has been the characteristic state of affairs between the two countries. Sheinin draws on both Spanish- and English-language sources in the United States, Argentina, Canada, and Great Britain to provide a broad perspective on the two centuries of shared U.S.-Argentine history with fresh focus in particular on cultural ties, nuclear politics in the cold war era, the politics of human rights, and Argentina's exit in 1991 from the nonaligned movement. From the perspectives of both countries, Sheinin discusses such topics as Pan-Americanism, petroleum, communism and fascism, and foreign debt. Although the general trajectory of the two countries' relationship has been one of cooperative interaction based on generally strong and improving commercial and financial ties, shared strategic interests, and vital cultural contacts, Sheinin also emphasizes episodes of strained ties. These include the Cuban Revolution, the Dirty War of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and the Falklands/Malvinas War. In his epilogue, Sheinin examines Argentina's monetary crash of December 2001, when the United States-in a major policy shift-refused to come to Argentina's rescue.

Juan Perón's decade-long regime, from 1946 to 1955, is often presented as Nazi-fascist and antisemitic – claims that are strongly rooted in Argentina's collective unconscious and popular culture. Challenging this widely held view, Raanan Rein asserts that there was greater Jewish support for Perón than previously believed, and that fewer antisemitic incidents took place in Argentina during Perón's rule than during any other period in the twentieth century. Recovering the silenced voices of Jewish Argentines who supported Peronism from the beginning, Populism and Ethnicity is a historical, sociological, and political analysis that describes the many positive changes experienced by the Jewish community as a direct result of Perón's presidencies. Perón and his wife Eva gave numerous speeches denouncing antisemitism, and Perón's Argentina was the first Latin American country to open an embassy in the newly established State of Israel. Arguing that no president before Perón so unambiguously rejected discrimination against Jews, Rein shows that many Jews secured more important posts in government in the 1940s and 1950s than in previous years, among them members of the Argentine Jewish Organization, which became a section of the ruling Peronist party. Deconstructing the myth of antisemitism during Perón's regime, Populism and Ethnicity looks deep into the heart of international memory for the truth behind Jewish-Argentine relations.

Argentines ask how their ultracivilized country, reputedly the most European in Latin America, could have relapsed into near-barbarism in the 1970s. This enlightening study seeks to answer that question by reviewing the underlying political events and intellectual foundations of the "dirty war" (1975–1978) and overlapping Military Process (1976–1982). It examines the ideologies and actions of the main protagonists—the armed forces, guerrillas, and organized labor—over time and traces them to their roots. In the most comprehensive treatment of the subject to date, Hodges examines primary materials never seen by other researchers, including clandestinely published guerrilla documents, and interviews important actors in Argentina's political drama. His wide-ranging scholarship traces the origins of the national security and national salvation doctrines to the Spanish Inquisition, sixteenth-century witch hunts, and nineteenth-century reactions to the modernizing ideologies of liberalism, democracy, socialism, and communism. Hodges posits that the "dirty war," Military Process, and revolutionary war to which they responded represented the culmination of social tensions that arose in 1930 with the launching of the Military Era by Argentina's first successful twentieth-century coup. He offers the disquieting hypothesis that as long as the "Argentine Question" remains unsettled the military may intervene again, the resistance movement will remain strong, and violence may continue even under a democratic government.
