Siempre hay seres humanos detrás de nuestras acciones. Por ejemplo, al publicar mis libros he sentido que sería muy bueno que Alfonso y José Vicente González dijeran que estaban agradables. El último murió en 1932. Me falta un ala. Este es para Alfonso. Aparecen tantos jóvenes y mueren tantos colegas de juventud, que estoy medio muerto, por lo menos se me quita el miedo a la muerte. Las nuevas juventudes son como nuevas visitas, con quienes no encontramos qué decir. Decididamente, pasados los treinta años, cada día es más evidente que nuestro puesto en la tierra lo necesitan y reclaman otros. ¡Abran campo, pues, queridos amigos muertos, que me siento empujado hacia vosotros! Pero mientras tanto cantemos a la juventud, que es lo único. Lo demás son las meras nadas. La juventud es bella aunque no se bañe. Por eso, por amor a ella, para no separármele, he querido permanecer siempre aficionado y no ser profesional. Así puedo contradecirme, no tengo obligaciones, me parece que estoy aún en el colegio de los jesuitas y que no he terminado mi documentación. Porque soy también un jesuita soltado. Me da hasta risa pensar en el asco que le tengo a la terminación de los estudios, a la vejez y a la muerte. Porque cuando uno cree que ya sabe una cosa, es porque ya se murió. Todos son muertos, menos los que nos documentamos y nos documentamos, como los jueces que se demoran y se demoran. ¿El juicio? ¡Va! Eso es matar el proceso filosófico... Lo único que sé es que la filosofía es un camino, una amistad y no un matrimonio con la verdad. Ésta no se ha casado, es virgen, una virgen juguetona. Quien afirme que ha poseído la verdad es un... viejo sofista.

The first Latin American to receive a Nobel Prize for Literature, the Chilean writer Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957) is often characterized as a healing, maternal voice who spoke on behalf of women, indigenous peoples, the disenfranchised, children, and the rural poor. She is that political poet and more: a poet of philosophical meditation, self-consciousness, and daring. This is a book full of surprises and paradoxes. The complexity and structural boldness of these prose-poems, especially the female-erotic prose pieces of her first book, make them an important moment in the history of literary modernism in a tradition that runs from Baudelaire, the North American moderns, and the South American postmodernistas. It's a book that will be eye-opening and informative to the general reader as well as to students of gender studies, cultural studies, literary history, and poetry. This Spanish-English bilingual volume gathers the most famous and representative prose writings of Gabriela Mistral, which have not been as readily available to English-only readers as her poetry. The pieces are grouped into four sections. "Fables, Elegies, and Things of the Earth" includes fifteen of Mistral's most accessible prose-poems. "Prose and Prose-Poems from Desolación / Desolation [1922]" presents all the prose from Mistral's first important book. "Lyrical Biographies" are Mistral's poetic meditations on Saint Francis and Sor Juana de la Cruz. "Literary Essays, Journalism, 'Messages'" collects pieces that reveal Mistral's opinions on a wide range of subjects, including the practice of teaching; the writers Alfonso Reyes, Alfonsina Storni, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Pablo Neruda; Mistral's own writing practices; and her social beliefs.
