La mayoría de mis estudiantes me preguntan en algún momento, ¿y esto donde me va a servir? Sobre todo, cuando vemos ideas de matemáticas más abstractas para ellos, como puede ser el cálculo de raíces de un polinomio. Incluso, alguno ha hecho un chiste diciendo “ni modo que vaya a la tienda y le diga a la señora que me venda de arroz”. Hay que decir que, en gran parte, esta falta de conexión de la matemática con la realidad de la persona común (esto no pasa con aquellos que estudian la carrera de matemáticas) se debe en cierta medida a un mal diseño en los planes y programas de estudio desde el nivel básico, hasta el nivel medio superior, en donde se le da preferencia a la enseñanza de algoritmos en lugar de mostrar la belleza de la matemática que se da a través del pensamiento. Así pues, el objetivo principal de este texto es acercar a la persona común a la matemática y mostrarle que, de hecho, está se presenta en todos lados (literalmente), que a donde quiera que vaya o lo que sea que haga, todo está relacionado con la matemática. No estaría mal que el lector realizara el ejercicio de imaginarse como sería su vida sin las matemáticas, pues, por ejemplo, esto afectaría el sistema de transporte, el sistema de comunicaciones vaya hasta el internet no existiría sin las matemáticas. A lo largo del libro veremos una gran variedad de ejemplos en la vida cotidiana en donde se usan las matemáticas. No me cabe la mayor duda que el lector se sorprenderá de la gran cantidad de usos que tiene la matemática que aprende en la escuela. Evidentemente, un libro no es suficiente para mostrar como las matemáticas están en todos lados, en todo lo que hacemos, incluso hasta en la forma en que pensamos, pero es una pequeña introducción y quizá, en el futuro, podamos escribir una segunda parte con más ejemplos, tan hermosos como los que aquí muestro.

Los juegos han sido parte de la vida del hombre desde siempre, pero quizá a finales del milenio anterior, nos dimos cuenta de su importancia sobre todo por la política y la economía. Cuando dos grandes empresas pelean por ganar compradores establecen un juego. Obviamente, entre más compradores tenga una empresa, mayor será su ganancia. Así que cotidianamente usan estrategias para ganar compradores. Un ejemplo común son las “ofertas” en donde bajan los precios de ciertos productos por un tiempo, buscando atraer más compradores. Pero piense un poco, si una empresa usa esa estrategia, la otra empresa no puede quedarse sin hacer nada, por lo que se verá obligada a contrarrestar la jugada de la empresa contraria. Es decir, se establece un juego entre ellas. Lo mismo pasa en la política cuando varios contrincantes buscan que la población voté por ellos, cada uno realiza una estrategia buscando obtener la mayor cantidad de votantes. Si lo piensa un poco, verá que los juegos están en su vida diaria. Cuando busca una estrategia para hacer el menor tiempo posible a su trabajo (compite contra otros que buscan lo mismo y pueden afectar su trayecto al trabajo), cuando quiere “obligar” a sus hijos a hacer tareas del hogar, cuando piensa en negociar un aumento salarial, etcétera. El propósito de este libro es introducirlo al mundo de los juegos, pero desde una perspectiva formal. Empezaremos por ver ejemplos de juegos y estrategias para ganarlos, y luego formalizaremos estas definiciones en los capítulos 2 y 3. Espero que le resulte entretenido conocer esta gran teoría matemática.

Most of my students ask me at some point, and this where will it serve me? Especially when we see more abstract mathematical ideas for them, such as the calculation of roots of a polynomial. Someone even made a joke by saying "no way I go to the store and tell the lady to sell me of rice". It must be said that, in large part, this lack of connection of mathematics with the reality of the common person (this does not happen with those who study the career of mathematics) is due to some extent to a bad design in the plans and programs of study from the basic level, to the upper level, where preference is given to the teaching of algorithms instead of showing the beauty of mathematics that occurs through thought. So, the main objective of this text, is to bring the ordinary person to the math and show that, in fact, is presented everywhere (literally), that wherever you go or whatever you do, all is related to mathematics. It would not be bad for the reader to do the exercise of imagining what his life would be like without mathematics, because, for example, this would affect the transportation system, the communications system, the Internet would not exist without mathematics. Throughout the book we will see a variety of examples in everyday life where mathematics is used. I do not have the biggest doubt that the reader will be surprised at the many uses of mathematics that he learns in school. Obviously, a book is not enough to show how mathematics is everywhere, in everything we do, even in the way we think, but it is a little introduction and maybe, in the future, we can write a second part with more examples, as beautiful as the ones I show here.

Games have always been a part of man's life, but perhaps at the end of the previous millennium, we realized their importance mainly because of politics and economics. When two large companies fight to win buyers, they establish a game. Obviously, the more buyers a company has, the greater its profit. So on a daily basis they use strategies to win buyers. A common example is "bidding" where they lower the prices of certain products for a while, looking to attract more buyers. But think about it, if a company uses this strategy, the other company can't just sit back and do nothing, so it will be forced to counteract the other company's move. In other words, a game is established between them. The same thing happens in politics when several opponents look for the population to vote for them, each one performs a strategy seeking to obtain the largest number of voters. If you think about it a little, you will see that games are in your daily life. When you are looking for a strategy to make your time at work as short as possible (you are competing against others who are looking for the same thing and can affect your commute to work), when you want to "force" your children to do housework, when you are thinking about negotiating a salary increase, and so on. The purpose of this book is to introduce you to the world of games, but from a formal perspective. We will start by looking at examples of games and strategies for winning them, and then formalize these definitions in chapters 2 and 3.
