El reinado de Fernando VII (1808-1833) ha sido tradicionalmente enfocado desde el punto de vista del nacimiento de las dos Españas: la liberal y la absolutista. Pero surgirá un tercer camino, una vía media reformista, equidistante entre la revolución y el inmovilismo, por la que transcurrirán los afrancesados en estos años en que entra en crisis el Antiguo Régimen. Cimentado sobre un estudio prosopográfico de más de 4.000 afrancesados, el trabajo va más allá de los años de la guerra de la Independencia, presentando su trayectoria durante el exilio en Francia, donde habrá tiempo para la reflexión y la justificación de sus actos, el Trienio Liberal, en el que jugarán un papel destacado especialmente desde la prensa, y la llamada «década ominosa», en la que les corresponderá casi exclusivamente el protagonismo en el lento proceso de apertura económico-administrativa que facilitará el tránsito hacia el Nuevo Régimen liberal. El autor rescata la memoria colectiva de aquellos «traidores» que jugaron un papel nada desdeñable en estos años de incertidumbre, de cambio.
