En este libro se analizan los procesos sociales que acompañan a la minería española en el final de su trayecto industrial. Seis comunidades mineras de distintas zonas, con historias diferentes y procesos particulares de explotación, constituyen la base empírica sobre la que se plantean cuestiones relativas a las identidades mineras, a la configuración de los grupos domésticos, a las estrategias empresariales y su relación con la vida cotidiana de los mineros, y al papel jugado en ellas por los sindicatos y el poder local. Mineros de Aller, de Langreo e Ibias en Asturias, del Bierzo Alto en León, de As Encrobas en Coruña y de Riotinto en Huelva, comparten, más allá de sus peculiaridades, formas de vida equivalentes, ajustadas las características comunes del trabajo en la mina. La minería es una actividad exclusivamente masculina, de gran dureza y frecuentemente de riesgo, con problemas territoriales derivados de su profunda vinculación con la tierra, que interfieren en los asentamientos, en los usos alternativos de los espacios sociales, en los ritmos de trabajo y en la vida cotidiana de los sujetos sociales. Los materiales utilizados se han recogido con técnicas antropológicas, durante un prolongado trabajo de campo en cada una de las zonas mineras elegidas.
