Esta obra se concentra en los últimos doscientos años de vida en común del pueblo mapuche con el Estado chileno y se fundamenta en documentos históricos y vivencias personales del autor que dan cuenta de ese encuentro. Su eje es el prejuicio racista y la discriminación que sufre el mapuche urbano y rural. En su análisis es medular el papel de la escuela tradicional que, mediante sus contenidos, se convierte en un instrumento de hostigamiento a las culturas diferentes de la oficial, perpetuando así estructuras sociales o normas culturales de sometimiento. Tales instituciones, por ser la expresión valórica de los grupos dominantes, ejercen una violencia simbólica en contra de los que provienen de culturas diferentes a la oficial. Un ensayo fundamental, sólido y profundo, relacionado con el compartimiento desigual por dos pueblos de un mismo territorio: Chile. Un libro no solo de psicología social, sino que también abarca temas antropológicos, históricos, filosóficos y culturales vinculados con la coexistencia, rara vez pacífica, entre estos pueblos . El autor analiza, con muy sólidos fundamentos, las causas que llevan al pueblo chileno a actuar en forma excluyente y con visos de superioridad, y al pueblo mapuche a ser excluido y tratado en forma desigual. Debería ser un texto de estudio obligatorio para los alumnos de educación media, por su calidad, por la verdad que contiene y por su importancia social.
