El segundo volumen de la colección Historia de las Merindades está dedicado a la jurisdicción de Espinosa de los Monteros, una jurisdicción muy especial. Veremos cómo el medieval valle de Espinosa fue llamado a partir de la Baja Edad Media Espinosa de los Monteros, fue siempre de realengo, no tuvo cambios en su composición desde que tenemos documentación de ella, en la Alta Edad Media. La historia medieval de la jurisdicción de Espinosa no estaría completa sin hacer la historia de los montes de Somo y de Pas, dado que han sido y, aún son, su medio y forma de vida principal. Son los montes del cordal cantábrico, límites entre las merindades de Valdeporres, de Sotoscueva y Espinosa de los Monteros, todos en Burgos, en la vertiente sur, donde se les conoce como montes del Somo, y las villas de San Pedro del Romeral, Vega de Pas y San Roque de Riomiera, donde se les conoce como montes de Pas. De forma excepcional en la colección Historia de las Merindades, se estudian los conflictos que se produjeron hasta el siglo XIX, dado que son muy numerosos y muy ilustrativos de la manera de entender la vida en la montaña. Analiza el poblamiento en Espinosa y en los montes de Pas, indica su origen, su presencia en la documentación, identifica despoblados y los sitúa geográficamente. Por último, este volumen cuenta con un anexo en el que se trascriben las sentencias que son objeto de tratamiento histórico en la obra.
