The Black Doctors of Colonial Lima focuses on the lives and fortunes of three of the most distinguished among this group of black physicians: José Pastor de Larrinaga, a surgeon of controversial medical ideas who passionately defended the right of scientific learning for Afro-Peruvians; José Manuel Dávalos, a doctor who studied medicine at the University of Montpellier and played a key role in the smallpox vaccination campaigns in Peru; and José Manuel Valdés, a multifaceted writer who became the first and only person of black ancestry to become a chief medical officer in Spanish America. El presente libro tiene como objetivo analizar los procesos políticos e institucionales que transformaron la vida política de los habitantes de los antiguos territorios de la Capitanía General de Venezuela y del Virreinato de la Nueva Granada durante el inicio y establecimiento del gobierno representativo en la República de Colombia entre 1818 y 1821. Se trata de años cruciales para el desmantelamiento del orden monárquico. Esta decisión implicó una ruptura radical con los principios de legitimidad política del Antiguo Régimen y dio lugar a la formación de un gobierno fundado sobre el principio de la soberanía popular. Para lograr este objetivo fue necesario tener en cuenta las características más significativas de los sistemas representativos que favorecieron la construcción de una nueva comunidad política, a saber: elecciones regulares de los funcionarios; independencia de los representantes con respecto a los representados; opinión libre de los gobernados a través de la prensa; y los procesos de debate en la toma de decisiones políticas a través de los órganos participativos.
