Cuando me preguntan por qué escribo ensayos, nunca sé qué decir. El primer impulso es contestar la verdad, "porque sí. .. porque me gusta", pero entiendo que la gente espera otro tipo de respuesta; esperan, con razón, que un escritor sepa dar cuenta al menos de los asuntos relacionados con su profesión. Por esto he aprendido a ensayar respuestas. A veces digo, y de verdad lo creo, que hago ensayos para pensar con cierto orden en algunos temas. Otras veces, digo que los hago porque no sé hacer aforismos, es decir, ensayos brevísimos, y envidio a esos sujetos que son capaces de poner en una sola línea la introducción, el desarrollo y la conclusión de un asunto complejo, y les sobra espacio para añadir humor, música, ironía. Son sujetos como Millor Fernandes: "El inventor del alfabeto era analfabeto". Leemos esta revelación ¡y apenas podemos creer que no se nos haya ocurrido antes! O como Francois Jacob, un señor capaz de demostrar que el blanco es un matiz del negro: "El brujo y el científico se parecen: ambos tratan de explicar fenómenos visibles por medio de fuerzas invisibles".
