Este libro compila el esfuerzo del Semillero de Investigación en Primatología y Conservación de sus Ecosistemas (SIPCE) y el Laboratorio de Historia Natural (IZBD) del Museo de Historia Natural de la Universidad de Caldas por resaltar y divulgar información asociada a las especies de primates y otros vertebrados que habitan en el departamento con miras a su conservación. Con este libro se busca promover el estudio sobre los primates del departamento y se plantean herramientas que permitan al lector entender cómo estudiar a los primates silvestres. Este libro está dividido en tres capítulos, El primero se encuentra enfocado en técnicas de estudio de primates, a través de un protocolo adoptado por SIPCE para estandarizar el muestreo y la toma de datos de primates. En el segundo capítulo abordamos temas de conservación e investigación en el departamento y en el tercer capítulo se presenta un compilado de fichas de las especies presentes en Caldas, con información sobre su distribución, historia natural y conservación acompañado de figuras y mapas.

Este libro tiene como objetivo difundir y compartir con las comunidades el conocimiento actual sobre los mamíferos carnívoros (orden Carnívora) presentes en el departamento de Caldas. Por esta razón, no está exclusivamente diseñado para aquellos que trabajan profesionalmente con estos grupos, sino también para que toda la comunidad pueda disfrutar al conocer los animales con los que comparten el territorio. A partir de este conocimiento, se busca fomentar una apropiación del valor de la fauna silvestre y promover la generación de estrategias para su conservación. En Caldas, se encuentran presentes 18 especies de Carnívora, que incluyen tanto a especies de gran tamaño como el jaguar y el oso de anteojos, como a otras de talla pequeña como las comadrejas, que son del tamaño de una ardilla común. También se pueden encontrar especies como la nutria, el zorro, el mapache, los cusumbos y tigrillos. Esta obra recopila información sobre la alimentación y los hábitos de estos mamíferos y, además, destaca los esfuerzos realizados para documentar la diversidad de Carnívora en Caldas. Esto se logró mediante la recopilación de registros de distribución y la revisión de publicaciones académicas que han contribuido, en diferentes escalas, al conocimiento de este grupo fascinante que desempeña una función crucial en el mantenimiento de los ecosistemas naturales.

This volume was created initially from a symposium of the same name presented at the International Primatological Society's XVIII Congress in Adelaide. South Australia. 6-12 January 2000. Many of the authors who have contributed to this text could not attend the symposium. so this has become another vehicle for the rapidly growing discipline of Fragmentation Science among primatologists. Fragmentation has quickly become a field separate from general ecology. which underscores the severity of the situation since we as a planet are rapidly losing habitat of all types to human disturbance. Getting ecologists. particularly primatologists. to admit that they study in fragments is not easy. In the field of primatology. one studies many things. but rarely do those things (genetics. behavior. population dynamics) get called out as studies in fragmentation. For some reason "fragmentation primatologists" fear that our work is somehow "not as good" as those who study in continuous habitat. We worry that perhaps our subjects are not demonstrating as robust behaviors as they "should" given fragmented or disturbed habitat conditions. I had a colleague openly state that she did not work in fragmented forests. that she merely studied behavior when it was clear that her study sites. everyone of them. was isolated habitat. Our desire to be just another link in the data chain for wild primates is so strong that it makes us deny what kinds of habitats we are working in. However.
