La figura de Sebastián Gabriel de Borbón y Braganza (1811-1875) está casi arrinconada en la bibliografía española sobre nuestro siglo XIX. Olvido injusto, pues su vida ejemplifica las contradicciones y vaivenes de la época. Infante de España y Portugal y bisnieto de los reyes Carlos III y Carlos IV, estrechamente ligado a la familia real española, la primera parte de su vida hasta los 24 años fue la de un príncipe consagrado al estudio y a sus aficiones artísticas. Desde muy joven inició la formación de una colección pictórica que, en su época, fue considerada un segundo Prado, y sus intereses intelectuales se extendieron a la física y la música; ya en su madurez se convirtió en pionero de la fotografía en España. Influencias familiares le llevarían a integrarse en el partido carlista en 1835. Finalmente, la nostalgia de España y la soledad del exilio le condujeron a reconocer a Isabel II y a retornar a la patria en 1859. Sus arrepentimientos políticos provocaron que fuera considerado un traidor por el partido carlista, y un elemento reaccionario en la familia real por los progresistas. No obstante, en medio de las turbulencias de su vida, los que le conocieron íntimamente lo calificaron de hombre equilibrado y tolerante, aunque demasiado frágil para resistir las presiones de los que le rodeaban.
