In mid-nineteenth-century Mexico, garrisons, town councils, state legislatures, and an array of political actors, groups, and communities began aggressively petitioning the government at both local and national levels to address their grievances. Often viewed as a revolt or a coup d'état, these pronunciamientos were actually a complex form of insurrectionary action that relied first on the proclamation and circulation of a plan that listed the petitioners' demands and then on endorsement by copycat pronunciamientos that forced the authorities, be they national or regional, to the negotiating table. In Independent Mexico, Will Fowler provides a comprehensive overview of the pronunciamiento practice following the Plan of Iguala. This fourth and final installment in, and culmination of, a larger exploration of the pronunciamiento highlights the extent to which this model of political contestation evolved. The result of more than three decades of pronunciamiento politics was the bloody Civil War of the Reforma (1858-60) and the ensuing French Intervention (1862-67). Given the frequency and importance of the pronunciamiento, this book is also a concise political history of independent Mexico.

Adam Smith’s An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations was the product of the rich tradition of the Scottish Enlightenment but the book’s fame immediately spread across the whole of Europe. This book looks at the long journey of Smith’s ideas from Scotland to peninsular Spain, reconstructing in detail the reception, adaptation, interpretation, and application of Smith's central concepts from 1777 up to 1840. In light of methodological advances during the last two decades in the history of economic thought and the studies on the late Spanish Enlightenment and early Liberalism, the book tackles a series of significant issues and gaps in the historiography. In particular: this book sheds new light on the role of France as an intermediate step as the ideas spread from Britain southwards; the analysis draws not just on translations but also handwritten materials, book reviews, syntheses, summaries, plagiarism and rebuttals; a wide range of methods of dissemination are considered including the printing press and periodicals, parliamentary debates, academic chairs and societies; the role of individual translators and agents is given due prominence; the political interpretations of the Wealth of Nations and the ways in which the book was incorporated into the work of Spanish economists in the decades following publication are also considered. El documento de Pani, también se puede interpretar como una crítica a Ia política económica del gobierno del presidente Adolfo Ruiz Cortines y su secretario de Hacienda, Antonio Carrillo Flores, por la devaluación monetaria que sufrió la economía en abril de 1954. El debate de los secretarios de Hacienda es uno de los momentos en que las ideas de dos posturas de política económica en México se confrontan: la liberal y la desarrollista.

Otros trabajos de este libro analizan tanto las vicisitudes que experimentaron las economías brasileña y mexicana en la transición de colonia a nación, así como los éxitos y contratiempos de las economías mexicana y ecuatoriana en el siglo XX. Tanto en su conjunto como en trabajos específicos, el volumen aborda la problemática de la transición. A la luz de los ensayos aquí presentados, este concepto se entiende como el paso de un Estado ocupado en colectar impuestos indirectos y distribuirlo en gastos de guerra y deuda a otro que ya expandió su abanico de ingresos y se hace cargo de fomentar la economía y cuidar el bienestar de su población. En el estudio de esta transición, el tema obligado en la mayoría de los trabajos es el del federalismo. En estas páginas se exploran casos particulares de Brasil y México. La conclusión es que el federalismo no contiene una definición a priori, sino que debe explicarse y com¬prenderse a la luz del momento histórico y situación geográfica de cada nación.
