Desde 2007 la economía española, y consecuentemente la andaluza, sufrió una crisis sin precedentes en el que el sector de la construcción ha sido uno de los más afectados. Dicho sector se había caracterizado como uno de los motores de la expansión económica del período anterior. Durante los años de expansión económica este sector generó numerosos empleos que fueron ocupados por trabajadores autóctonos e inmigrantes. Tras el colapso del sector, una de las repercusiones más importantes ha sido el aumento del paro, que está produciendo importantes efectos socioeconómicos y psicosociales en los trabajadores. La presente tesis doctoral tiene como principal objetivo analizar dichas repercusiones laborales y sociales de la crisis del sector de la construcción sobre los trabajadores inmigrantes en comparación con los autóctonos. Para ello se definen once objetivos específicos que analizan la evolución de la construcción en la época de expansión económica (objetivos 1 y 2), se profundiza en las repercusiones de la crisis en el ámbito laboral y su impacto sobre los trabajadores en lo referente a la percepción de amenaza como predictor de conflictos sociales (objetivos del 3 al 8), y, por último, se identifican las estrategias desarrolladas por los empresarios y los trabajadores del sector (autóctonos e inmigrantes) frente a la crisis (objetivos 9 y 10), también se analizan las perspectivas de recuperación del sector en su futuro inmediato (objetivo 11). Con el fin de alcanzar los objetivos propuestos se realiza una investigación mixta que combina metodología cuantitativa con cualitativa. Así, se ha realizado un análisis extenso de las principales fuentes estadísticas publicadas, tanto generales sobre el mercado de trabajo, como especificas del sector de la construcción. Se contemplan tres ámbitos geográficos de estudio (España, Andalucía y Almería). Por su parte, el estudio de corte cualitativo se ha realizado en la provincia de Almería entre los años 2010 y 2011, y está basado, por un lado, en grupos de discusión desarrollados con trabajadores nacionales y extranjeros del sector, y, por otro lado, en entrevistas en profundidad realizadas a empresarios del sector. A partir de los análisis de las fuentes estadísticas realizados se muestra el fuerte impacto que la intensidad de la crisis ha causado sobre el mercado laboral español y concretamente sobre el sector de la construcción que resulta ser el sector mas perjudicado. Además, los trabajadores inmigrantes han sido afectados en mayor medida por la crisis en la construcción. Por otro lado, los discursos obtenidos de los principales implicados ponen de manifiesto que las dificultades económicas a las que se enfrentan los trabajadores del sector y los problemas para encontrar nuevos empleos están afectando las relaciones entre los trabajadores de las distintas nacionalidades. La intensificación de la competencia por el empleo y la percepción creciente de amenaza laboral ha incrementado la aparición de discursos hostiles entre los trabajadores españoles hacia los extranjeros. Respecto a las estrategias adoptadas para afrontar la crisis por los empresarios van encaminadas a paliar las enormes pérdidas económicas que han sufrido. Por su parte, las estrategias implementadas por los trabajadores españoles y extranjeros son bastante similares y su capacidad de resistencia ante las dificultades económicas ha estado marcada por las redes de apoyo con las que contaban. En general, se percibe el futuro del sector con bastante pesimismo ante el estancamiento que sufre el sector en su recuperación.

This edited book presents a significant and timely contribution to our understanding of a broad range of issues pertaining to COVID-19 and its relationship to occupational safety, health and well-being (OSHW) in the global construction industry.
