Esta obra trajo consigo una fuerte polémica, desde la prohibición y quema del libro en los países musulmanes hasta graves disturbios tanto en Inglaterra como en Estados Unidos. El 14 de febrero de 1989, el ayatolá Jomeini proclamó una fetua instando a la población musulmana a ejecutar a cualquier persona relacionada con la publicación del libro.
