Beliefs can be dangerous. Religious, political, or romantic, they all share one thing in common: they require unconditional acceptance despite all information to the contrary. In teenaged bravado, I came to scrutinize all the beliefs that had been imposed on me and found them wanting. A tall, dark stranger, a revolutionary from an exotic land, drew me to him by the very differences in beliefs and mindset he represented. I sensed the danger in him, but what could be learned, or what new comfort zone attained, seemed much more important to me. As a result, I found myself trapped in the turbulent Iran of 1982. It was a place of contrasts: stark hostility, gracious hospitality, beautiful arts, harsh theocrats, ancient architecture, dress, and ways mixed easily with those of the modern day. Lost in a flood of foreign passions, I was eager to adapt and learn but unwilling to surrender the civil rights I took for granted as an American. When I bore my first child and was given no rights in raising him, I rebelled utterly.

Beliefs can be dangerous. Religious or romantic, they all share one thing in common: they require unconditional acceptance despite any information to the contrary. Such was my experience when, as a dissaffected Pentacostal Christian, I met and fell in love with an Iranian revolutionary and ended up going with him to what seemed to me the most dangerous place on earth at the time: his homeland, post-revolutionary Iran of 1982. Suddenly I was trapped in a wholly alien culture, sometimes enchanting, other times terrifying. The enchantment lay in its arts, the graciousness of the people, the loveliness of its archetecture, gardens, and charming villages. The terror was in local acts of terrorism, the proximity of the Iran-Iraq war, the anti-American hate rallies in the streets, and the utter legal repression and abuse of women under the Islamic regime and draconian sharia laws. It all affected me very personally. It affected the relationship I had with my newborn son. This is my memoir of that haunting and turbulent time of my life that nearly ended it. It's also Iran's story, the story of a revolution, those affected by it, and the devastating realities of terrorism, war, gender politics, and theocracy laid bare.

Britain’s high street revolution has made retailing one of the most important and dynamic sectorsof the British economy in the last twenty years. It has had an irreversible impact on our towns and cities and, for many people, transformed shopping from an unattractive domestic chore to a pleasurable ‘leisure ‘experience’, offering consumers an everchanging array of ‘disposable dreams’. The resulting ‘retail culture’ is everywhere – it has colonised huge areas of our social life outside the traditional high street, from sporting venues to arts centres, from railway termini to museums. Many see it as the epitome of Thatcher’s Britain, breeding acquisitive individualism and destroying our traditional manufacturing base. Others see it as a potential saviour of an ailing economy. Yet to date there has been no thorough analysis of this all-pervasive phenomenon, from its economic roots to its profound social effects. In Consuming Passion, Carl Gardner and Julie Sheppard have written the first overall study of the ‘retail revolution’ – a controversial and hard-hitting look at where retailing has come from, what it has achieved and where it is going. Key issues such as the role of design, the growth of the supermarket and shopping centre and the poor conditions of retail employment are all minutely examined. The book also discusses the very real pleasures that consumers gain from today’s enhanced shopping experience. The authors take an iconoclastic look at some of the powerful myths that have sprung up around retail: ‘the death of the high street’ scenario; the central role of credit; retailing as a major creator of employment; and the imminent possibility of ‘retail saturation’. A fascinating book for everyone who likes shopping – and even those who hate it. First published 1989.

Bradley Manning was arrested, imprisoned in solitary confinement for nine months, and court-martialed for leaking nearly half a million classified government documents, including the infamous “Collateral Murder” gunsight video. He was an intelligence analyst in the US Army’s 10th Mountain Division, is twenty-four, and comes from Crescent, Oklahoma. But who is Private First Class Bradley Manning? Why did he commit the largest security breach in American history—and why was it so easy? In this book, the astonishing leaks attributed to Bradley Manning are viewed from many angles, from Tunisia to Guantánamo Bay, from Foggy Bottom to Baghdad to small-town Oklahoma. Around the world, the eloquent act of one young man obliges citizens to ask themselves if they have the right to know what their government is doing.

In an industry that celebrates extravagance and showmanship, Danish film director Carl Th. Dreyer was a rarity, a man who guarded his privacy fiercely and believed that film provided a way to understand human nature by focusing on the individual person. Best known for his 1928 film The Passion of Joan of Arc, dominated by its emotionally harrowing close-ups of Joan during her trial, it was Dreyer who pioneered some of the seminal techniques of modern film, techniques that would later be made famous by better known contemporaries such as Sergei Eisenstein and D.W. Griffith. Now, in My Only Great Passion, the first full-length English language biography of Dreyer, Jean and Dale D. Drum restore his reputation to its rightful place. Based on extensive and exclusive interviews with both Dreyer and the people who worked with him—including personal correspondence dating back to 1952—this biography provides the most comprehensive critical examination to date of both Dreyer's life and his approach to filmmaking. A valuable resource for film critics and historians, those in the film industry, and university cinema departments, as well as anyone with an interest in Danish art and culture, My Only Great Passion provides long neglected insights into the man who first raised European film above the level of entertainment and placed it in the realm of art.

A forgotten diary, lost for forty years, reveals the story of a rediscovered love nearly lost in 1999 Paris. An unforgettable romance filled with danger, intrigue, and a love without boundaries, Passions in Paris: Revelations of a Lost Diary tells the story of forbidden love, salacious adultery, cunning jealousy, and unrequited passion. This complex and stirring story, revolving around star-crossed soul mates, Canadian author Joy Wychmere, and Irish actor Cullen Malone, tells how their immeasurable love is put to the test by three vindictive people, the worst, namely Philippe Robealard, a delusional, misguided homosexual artist who is determined to make the unsuspecting actor suffer for stealing the man he loves, until he has paid in full with his life. Joy and Cully battle through a series of misunderstandings, embarrassment, torture, and injury until Joy is left fighting to survive a direct gunshot, while Cullen is given the choice of consuming a bottle of barbiturates - certain to take his life - or lose Joy forever if he does not. If this is not enough, the trapped couple's fate grows direr when fire is discovered raging toward them. Endurance and determination is stretched to the limit, asking if love truly can survive all odds, and time.
