“도시의 내밀한 삶과 심장, 영혼을 묘사하고 싶었다” 모든 거리를 직접 걸으며 그려낸 뉴욕시의 세밀화 다양한 것들을 녹여서 진화하는 메트로폴리탄의 참모습 ★★2013 미국출판인협회 우수학술도서상 사회학 및 사회복지학 부문 수상작★★ ★★2015 GANYC 어워드 최우수 저술상 수상작★★ 대도시란 무엇인가? 대도시는 어떤 경로를 거쳐왔고 어떤 방향으로 흘러갈 것인가? 대도시는 그야말로 거대하고 복잡한 대상이어서, 이런 질문에 답하려면 난감해지기만 한다. 대도시에는 가지각색의 사람이 수없이 모여들며, 이들이 대도시를 정의하는 동시에 대도시가 사람들을 정의하기 때문이다. 사람들은 저마다의 뿌리, 언어, 문화와 꿈을 가지고 서로 부딪치고 합쳐져 한 문장으로 정리할 수 없는 화학작용을 일으킨다. 최소한의 범주화가 가능하다고는 해도, 결국 대도시를 이루는 개인의 욕망과 꿈은 항상 개별적이며 더러는 의외의 사건이 된다. 그리고 그런 개인들의 이야기야말로 대도시의 내밀한 삶과 심장이며 영혼이다. 그러니 대도시는 구조적인 분석 틀로 일목요연하게 연구할 수 있는 대상이 아닐지도 모른다. 뉴욕이라는 거대 도시를 연구하려고 마음먹은 이 책의 저자는 하나의 관점이나 포괄적인 통계에만 의존하는 대신 ‘모든 거리를 직접 걸어보기’라는 대담한 방식을 택했다. 바로 민족지학적 방법론ethnographic method이다. 대도시의 대표 격이며 수많은 민족과 인종, 종교의 용광로인 뉴욕을 연구하는 만큼, 하나로 잘 정리된 담론을 제시하기보다 거리로 나가 사람들의 생생한 목소리를 들어보고 벌어지는 사건들에 직접 참여한 것이다. 그렇게 수행된 연구의 요체는 그간의 도시 연구에서는 찾아보기 힘들었던 구체적인 목소리와 질감, 풍경이다. 1만여 킬로미터를 걷고 수백 명과 대화하며 얻은 통찰로 가득한 이 책에서 독자는 연구실을 벗어난 연구자의 시선으로 뉴욕이라는 대도시를 속속들이 탐구해볼 수 있을 것이다. 누가 어디서 왜 사는가? 뉴욕은 여러 개별 커뮤니티의 집합체인 동시에 통일된 전체로서 나타난다. 다섯 개의 버러borough(뉴욕을 구성하는 자치구), 그 속의 수많은 네이버후드neighborhood, 커뮤니티, 거리에는 저마다의 역사와 규칙, 관습, 문화가 있다. 이들 작은 단위는 각각이 하나의 국가라고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도다. 그런데 뉴욕 시민들에게는 ‘뉴요커’라는 집단적 정체성 또한 존재한다. 문화 중심지, 다양성의 총본산, 젊음과 열기의 도시라는 뉴욕의 명성을 자랑스러워하고 기꺼이 뉴욕의 시민이라는 정체성을 내세우는 것이다. 특정 집단이 특정 지역에 정착하는 이유로는 무엇이 있을까? 분위기, 오락 시설과 쇼핑 공간 등 편의 시설, 교통, 교육 입지, 정원이나 문화 유산 등 여러 요인이 있다. 뉴욕에서 치안, 안전은 특히 중대한 기준이다. 오랜 시간 뉴욕은 범죄로 몸살을 앓아야 했지만, 행정부와 시민들의 노력으로 이제는 훨씬 더 안전해졌다. 다만 아직 위험이 실재하는 지역은 있고, 그런 지역 주민들은 뉴욕이 안전해졌다는 데 대체로 동의하지 않는다. 예를 들어 저자가 브롱크스에서 만난 한 주민은 이렇게 이야기했다. “글쎄요, 만약 살인율이 1년에 500명으로 내려갔다면, 그중 400명은 우리 건물 바로 앞에서 죽었겠군요. 숫자를 가지고 하고 싶은 대로 할 수는 있겠지만 여기서는 사람들이 계속 죽어나간답니다.” 이민자들의 도시, 뉴욕 “여기 있는 모든 사람은 어느 시점에서는 새로 온 사람들입니다. 그게 바로 뉴욕을 훌륭하게 만들죠.”(익명의 이민자) 이민은 뉴욕을 정의하는 중요한 키워드 중 하나다. 1960년대 이후 300만 명 이상이 뉴욕으로 흘러들어왔다. 이민자들의 에너지와 야망은 도시에 역동성을 부여하고 도시를 완전히 변화시켰다. 다양한 종교적, 민족적 배경을 가진 이들은 각자의 이유로 그 정체성을 유지하기도 하고 미국에 적응하기도 한다. 기존 주민과 이민자들이 서로 잘 화합하기도 하지만 잘 섞이지 않는 경우도 있다. 같은 민족적 배경을 가진 이민자들 사이에서도 갈등과 분리가 생겨나곤 한다. 이 모든 이합집산, 연결과 단절, 화합과 긴장의 화학반응을 통해 뉴욕은 계속해서 풍성해지고 있다. 삶을 꾸려나가기 위한 이들의 열정은 놀라울 정도다. 이민자들은 여러 직업에 종사하지만, 아무래도 쉽게 볼 수 있는 것은 길가의 델리(잡화점)나 노점상일 것이다. 저자가 브루클린에서 만난 서니라는 팔레스타인 출신 이민자는 길거리 음식을 팔아 생계를 꾸리고 있다. 그런데 입에 풀칠하는 정도가 아니라, 연 50만 달러 가까이 수입을 올리고 있다는 점이 놀랍다. 그도 그럴 것이, 서니는 다섯 언어를 구사하며 주 7일 하루 24시간 내내 델리를 운영한다. 서니에게서 우리는 ‘아메리칸드림’의 전형을, 각국에서 온 이민자가 뉴욕을 만들어나가는 방식을 볼 수 있다. 이민자들은 경제활동을 벌이는 낮 시간에 수많은 뉴요커와 접촉하고 교류한다. 아시아계 교사가 히스패닉계 학교에서 일하기도 하고, 이슬람교를 배경으로 둔 어린아이들이 유대인 학교에서 공부하기도 한다. 게다가 최근 들어 인종 간 결혼이 전국적 트렌드로 자리 잡기까지 했다. 예를 들어, 저자가 만난 어떤 의사는 아버지가 유대인이고 어머니가 멕시코인이어서 설문조사에서 인종을 묻는 칸을 비워두었다. 대도시의 과제 혹은 원동력, 젠트리피케이션 “저는 항상 뉴욕을 사랑했습니다. 뉴욕이기만 하면 어디든 상관없었습니다. 하고 싶은 게 뭔지는 잘 몰랐지만, 무엇이 됐든 이곳에서 이룰 가능성이 가장 크다는 것은 알고 있었습니다.”(코네티컷 출신 젠트리파이어) 지난 25년간 젠트리파이어가 뉴욕으로 대거 이주해왔다. 주로 젊은 전문직 종사자인 이들은 늘어난 일자리, 편리해진 교통, 풍부한 문화적 자본과 개선된 치안 행정 등에 이끌렸다. 한 세대 전에는 이들의 부모가 뉴욕에서 뉴욕 바깥으로 이주했다면, 이제 반대 방향으로의 이주가 뉴욕에 새 바람을 불어넣고 있는 것이다. 유입된 젠트리파이어가 기존의 빈곤층을 대체하는지 그렇지 않은지는 오랜 시간 논쟁의 대상이었다. 저자는 대체 현상이 발생하는 것은 분명하나 대체의 정도는 명확하지 않다고 주장한다. 젠트리피케이션은 분명 질 낮은 주거지역을 더 안전하게 만들고 각종 편의 시설과 새 주택을 유입시키는 효과가 있다. 하지만 새로 개업한 카페에서 케이크 한 조각이 4달러나 한다는 사실에 진저리를 치는 할렘의 한 주민처럼, 유입된 이들의 취향만을 반영하는 젠트리피케이션은 기존 주민들의 적대감을 불러일으킨다. 저자는 대체로 젠트리파이어들이 기존 주민들과 잘 어울리지 않는다는 결론을 내리지만, 젠트리피케이션은 놀라운 상호작용을 만들어내기도 한다. 퀸스할리스우드에 살고 있는 정통파 유대인 데이비드는 위층의 레즈비언 부부와 친밀한 관계를 맺었다. 아이들도 정기적으로 맡기고, 그들의 여름 별장에서 휴일을 보내기도 한다. 정통파 유대인으로서는 쉽게 상상할 수 없는 일이다. 그런가 하면 워싱턴하이츠에서 현지 도미니카계 흑인들과 대마초를 피우며 친분을 쌓은 젠트리파이어 학생도 있다. 이렇듯, 젠트리파이어를 통해 이질적인 주체들이 만들어나가는 새로운 관계가 정체되어 있던 지역에 활기를 불러오고 있다. 동화될 것인가, 정체성을 유지할 것인가 “저는 모든 것입니다. 어머니는 가봉과 프랑스계이고 아버지는 폴란드와 중국계입니다. 저는 제가 그냥 미국인인 것 같습니다.”(할렘의 한 레스토랑 웨이터) 수많은 시민 사이의 활발한 교류로 인해 다양한 인종, 민족, 종교 정체성이 곧 희석되어 하나로 뭉뚱그려질 것 같지만, 저자는 어디까지나 정체성은 선택의 문제라고 말한다. 얼마나 많은 사람이 구분되기를 원하고 얼마나 많은 사람이 동화되기를 원하는지는 각자의 처지와 맥락에 달려 있다. 저자가 사우스윌리엄스버그에서 만난 하시드파 노인은 남녀를 분리하는 하시드파 계율에 관해, “아름다운 이를 만날 수도 있지만 그렇게 되면 모든 종교적 정체성을 잃고 커뮤니티를 떠나야 한다”며 자기 삶의 태도를 자세히 설명해줬다. 반면 어떤 초정통파 유대인 동네의 코셔(유대인 율법을 따르는 음식) 가게에서는 최근에야 유대교로 개종한 매력적인 종업원과 신실한 정통파 젊은이들 사이에 교류가 생겨나고 있다. 서로 다른 이들이 점점 더 동화되어가는 경향은 뉴욕이 어느 때보다 더 자유롭고 관대한 도시로 나아가고 있다는 신호일지 모른다. 하지만 이는 그 수많은 사람이 정체성 불명의 뉴요커로 환원된다는 뜻은 아니다. 오히려 각자의 정체성은 그저 사실의 문제로, 삶의 일부로 받아들여지고 대도시의 다양성에 굳은 기반이 되어줄 것이다. 35년 동안 뉴욕에서 편견이 크게 줄어들었다는 점이 이를 뒷받침한다. 피부색, 국적, 인종, 종교, 출신지, 성적 정체성 등 개인을 규정하는 여러 성질은 그저 성질일 뿐 이제 절대적이지 않다. 뉴욕의 에너지는 이런 관대함에서 나오는 것인지도 모른다.
