Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 9: December, 1957 It has been estimated that hunting and fishing is a billion dollar business in Loni siana each year. That amazing figure is arrived at by estimating the amount of money spent by hunters and fishermen in the pursuit of their sport - for guns, shells, fishing tackle, equipment, gasoline, food, clothing, lodging, guides, licenses, etc. So you see hunting and fishing do play important roles in the economic health of our state and the recreation of our people. But who can measure the true value of a rabbit by the cost of the shell in the shotgun? How can the sight of a wild turkey be evaluated in terms of the price of the film used to record the scene? And when can the melodious whistle of the bobwhite be replaced by canned music on a radio? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 9: February, 1957 With the expectation that this year's regisration will exceed contestants, it was once more decided to dispense with boundaries for fishing waters and permit the sportsmen to fish anywhere in the Gulf Coast waters adjacent to Grand Isle from Southwest Pass around to Vermilion Bay, and as far out to sea as any venturesome fishermen decide to. Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 10: October 1958 Not so long ago a strange, weak creature appeared upon this planet possessing two attributes that enabled him to dominate all of the other creatures of this earth. The creature was, of course, man, and two attributes were his ability to think and also two thumbs. But for these thumbs man might have been destroyed long ago by larger animals and naturally that goes vice versa for his ability to think. Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 9: March, 1957 AS I shoved the boat out from the landing, I did so with much anticipation. The weather was ideal and only a slight breeze was blowing which would tend to make bass fishing better since the water was unusually clear. Between rains, the water in Cross Lake is always clear in the spring time as the algae content is not too high at that time of year. Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 8: September, 1956 For many years past, it has been the practice and custom for dads to take boys fishing, but more and more girls are taking part in athletics and outdoor sports, and that is as it should be. Girls, as well as boys, will derive great benefit, both mentally and physically, from having taken part in out door activities, especially fishing with dad. Through participation in outdoor sports, much is to be learned and gained from nature's fabulous and bountiful storehouse. Sitting on the bank of a small creek, water sparkling like diamonds in a mid-day sun, pole in hand, anticipating the strike of a bream or small mouth bass, losing one's self completely in the thought of what might happen, is one of the greatest forms of mental and physical relaxation imaginable. Little girls like to go fishing as well as little boys and it is a remark able fact that they become equally as adept in the piscatorial art as their brothers, so there is really no reason Why you shouldn't take your little girl fishing, providing, of course, that she wants to go. Strangely enough no one seems to have a fixed idea as to what little girls want. For that matter few people have any conception of What Is a Girl. Little girls are the nicest things that happen to people. They are born with a little bit of angel-shine about them and though it wears thin sometimes, there is always enough left to lasso your heart - even when they are sitting in the mud, or crying temperamental tears, or parading up the street in mother's best 'clothes. Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 9: April, 1957 All healthy boys have a certain amount of surplus energy which, apparently, must be worked off and sometimes this youthful exuberance carries them into dim and dangerous places strewn with vicious habits. But it is indeed rare to hear of a boy who loves to hunt or fish becoming a juvenile delinquent. Real sportsmanship, fair play and a sense of responsibility, all part and parcel of sports afield, cannot walk hand in hand with juvenile delinquency. They speak a different language.
