Set in South Africa just after the dawn of the Cold War and of Apartheid, Theo, who is responsible for his university's annual student charity drive, is smitten by his parade Queen, Teresa, a gorgeous dramatic arts student. As their relationship thickens, cross-town university students abduct him as a prank, which abruptly turns into an assault. With elegant persuasion, Teresa orchestrates the apprehension by the police of his abductors. Theo cunningly escapes without serious injury, while she takes the initiative to coerce the abduction leader's parents, in recompense for their son's transgression, into making a significant donation to her university's charity. Soon after, the son's badly beaten body is dumped on Theo's apartment floor, with a ransom note tied to his neck typed on stationery emblazoned with a reversed swastika logo, demanding the release from custody of its 'White Supremacist' members in custody. As symbols of their liberal institution, they are repeatedly attacked in ever more violent ways by the neonazi offspring of wartime Hitler sympathizers, now systematically infiltrating the recently elected government and influencing its policies toward hard line activism. Their hopes of evading more attacks are shattered by an attempt on Theo's life in which his assailant, disguised as a police detective, expires. Alleged to be the equivalent of a cop killer, Theo finds shelter in the American Embassy and frantically reaches out for news paper support in his defense by enlisting the help of a hard driving, seductive sociology student Sharon, eager to become a political newspaper journalist. She assists him with research as the basis for a tantalizingly suggestive press report, exposing the deceased assailant as an erstwhile instructor of saboteurs, recruited to hamper South Africa's contribution to Britain's defense of North Africa. The embittered survivors of the instructors' troop take revenge by kidnapping Teresa in broad daylight from a theatrical rehearsal to force Theo into the open. He anxiously marshals the help of his American host and the commanding officer of the special branch of the South African Police, to help find and liberate her. Theo leans heavily on Sharon and the senior American intelligence officer, to illuminate a clandestine commando training base north of the capital as the most likely place where Teresa could be held. In the ensuing helicopter raid, Teresa is recovered without permanent injury, but the kidnappers suffer numerous fatalities. The event exposes the alarming extent to which infiltration of the country's security forces by the fascists has become and seriously embarrasses the National Party Government. Theo takes cover in the home of a friend to study for his finals and upon emerging finds that Teresa was taken to a neurological institution following a narrow escape from being raped in her own bed at home. Outraged Theo takes Sharon with him to interview the rapist in prison and determines the identity of a warlord in Nelspruit who hired him. They continue their journey to learn more about the warlord, and to escape even more violent attacks they hide away on his family's Bushvelt farm. During a country dance party of their farming neighbors they become aware of four khaki-clad youths who attempt to follow them back to the farm. They lose their tail by manipulation on twisty farm roads and arrive home safely, but seriously concerned.

Driven by an enormous desire to demonstrate her worth as an individual, independent from her materially ambitious parents, Sharon prematurely finds her way into university by altering her birth date and by scholastic achievement qualifies for her MA degree a year early, freeing her to hone her reporting skills as editor of the student newspaper and freelancing at the leading English newspaper of the country. Well-endowed with good looks and sex appeal, she fends off romantic pretenders by the dozen without finding a kindred spirit worthy of her affection. Then she discovers Theo, an Afrikaner of Dutch Reform background in the far left leaning Student Representative Council. Using her media skills she begins supporting his struggle against the wartime fascists, who had clandestinely infiltrated the security forces of the country. As they expose more infiltrators at progressively senior levels, danger escalates and culminates in the kidnapping of his great love, Teresa. Sharon is actively drawn into liberating Teresa with much involvement of the country's Civil Investigation Division as well as American Intelligence. As Theo reveals his passion for Teresa, it dashes the near term hopes of Sharon for a romantic relationship with him. Still smitten, she continues her journalistic support of Theo and falls prey to an assassination attempt on the Bushvelt farm if his family. Theo shoots the assassin and together they arrest his three accomplices, much to the embarrassment of the Government, which sends Theo into exile. A corrupt magistrate releases the three accomplices who promptly sail to England, intent on killing Theo upon his arrival in Southampton. Theo transfers to a New York bound French ocean liner outside the three mile limit and they attack a fellow-traveler carrying his letters to mail from England. They are apprehended and the ensuing court case draws international attention as Sharon uses the London Times to broadcast the full meaning of the incident by testifying against them in the Southampton court. Seeking safety and still hoping for his love, Sharon joins Theo in Montreal. To continue her journalistic career she undertakes an assignment from the London Times to discover why Otto Strasser, one of the founders of the German National Socialist Party (NAZI), which was later hijacked by Adolf Hitler, is still held under house arrest in Nova Scotia. The shocking discovery of a sinister cabal of Communists, manipulating the American government to keep him in custody, exposes her and Theo to a new round of terror. Her comradeship with Theo deepens into a total commitment in spite of their dueling personalities and diverse ethnic backgrounds. Theo marries Sharon who cons his Dutch Reform parents into lovingly accepting her in spite of her Israeli Jewish background. To properly interview Otto Strasser, Theo uses his influence with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to bring him to a Lodge near Mont Tremblant. To keep their conversations strictly private Sharon and Strasser only talk to each other outdoors on hiking trails. Theo learns that the Lodge has been infiltrated by Communist Union members of the Longshoremen from Halifax and prevails on the RCMP to fly with him to interdict them from a position in the woods above the lodge. When Strasser and Sharon emerge from the Lodge three Communist rifle men become visible on a ledge below their position and Theo opens fire with the sniper rifle loaned to him by the RCMP to take out the gunman closest to the Lodge. The second gunman fires his assault rifle at Theo hitting him in his right leg before the nearest RCMP officer takes him out. The third gunman fires at Strasser and mortally wounds Sharon. She dies, badly injured in the arms of Theo in the hospital, leaving him mortified by the loss of his Sharon.

Apartheid in South Africa has now been gone more than fifteen years but the heroes of their struggle to achieve a Black majority-run democracy are still being revealed. Some individuals toiled publicly, but most worked tirelessly in the shadows to improve the welfare of the Black and Coloured populations that had been so neglected. Nelson Mandela was still in prison; clean water and sanitation barely existed; AIDS was beginning to orphan an entire generation. Meanwhile a white, Jewish, middle class woman, joined with Tutu, Millie, Ivy, Zora and other concerned Black women, respectfully called Mamas, to help those most in need, often being beaten and arrested by white security police. This book tells the story of these women and others who have spent their adult lives making South Africa a better place for those who were the countrys most disadvantaged.

The book is the story of a young American girl living in South Africa during the early years of Apartheid (1948-1960). One of six children of a Swedenborgian minister who was sent to South Africa to establish a theological school for Africans, the author reaches back into this unique time and place in an effort to rediscover the culture that influenced her own adult attitudes. Rather than following a strictly chronological format, the story is laid out in a series of verbal snapshots, supported by photographs. Family life, experienced through the eyes of a child living in a complex environment, contrasts with the lives of those who were impacted by the institutionalized racism of apartheid. Examples of the Acts of Apartheid at the end of each chapter include news articles, interviews, and commentary. Deep childhood fears of some unnamed threat are represented by home invasions, wildfires, and the cry of a hyena in the mountains. The mountains are dangerous, they present a great barrier, but they can be conquered. After returning permanently to America as a teenager¿through a confusing and sometimes painful process of discussion and observation¿the author uncovers those artifacts of the past that inform her place in the world today.

Gat, a 30-year-old member of the Katanga Gendarmerie, the Belgian colonial police force, is sent from the newly independent Congo to South Africa with a wallet full of blood money and instructions to Disappear. He arrives there, bearing a secret and searching for redemption. In Cape Town he meets Petra, the 18-year-old daughter of Piet Rousseau, who heads the Bureau of State Security for the apartheid government. When Gat and Piet meet at her parent's home their interaction is chilly, for Gat makes it clear that he does not believe in apartheid. And it soon becomes clear that Piet can employ draconian measures against anyone trying to oppose the regime's separation of the races. Gat and Petra are strongly attracted to one another. About to start university, Petra wants desperately to escape the overprotective care of her father. What better way to do this than to begin a passionate love affair with a mysterious man she hardly knows? When Petra and Gat set off on a road trip, the battle between Piet and Gat is fully engaged, and the outcome for all three of these people remains in limbo until the novel ends. This historical novel, based on actual events, provides a hair-rising look at the worst-of-times under the Afrikaner regime.
