ON DECEMBER 7, 1988, AN EARTHQUAKE DEVASTATED THE NORTHWESTERN SECTION OF ARMENIA, KILLING AN ESTIMATED 25,000 PEOPLE. In one small town, just after the earthquake, a father rushed to his son's school only to find that the school had been flattened. There was no sign of life. But he had no thought of turning back. He had often told his son, "No matter what, I'll always be there for you when you need me " Though his prospects appeared hopeless, the father began feverishly removing rubble from where he believed his son's classroom had been. Yet, he replied: "I made my son a promise that I'd be there for him anytime he needed me. I must continue to dig." Courageously, he worked alone; no one volunteered to help him. I told them that if you were alive, you'd save me, and when you saved me, they'd be saved. You promised you would always be there for me You did it, Dad " Moments later, the dad was helping his son Armand and 13 more frightened, hungry, and thirsty boys and girls climb out of the debris. Free at last When the building collapsed, these children had been spared in a tent-like pocket. When the townspeople praised Armand's dad, his explanation was, "I promised my son, 'No matter what, I'll be there for you '" THE GREATEST RESCUE Do you realize that God, the Heavenly Father, is in the rescue business? He has made the greatest effort possible to rescue us from a terrible plight. But unless we have a personal relationship with God through his Son, Jesus Christ, we have no hope of experiencing the benefit of his rescue-- spending eternity with him in heaven According to the Bible, our sin separates us from God: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23), and "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). This means separation from God forever. But the Bible tells us that God "so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). He offers you the free gift of "eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23). You cannot be saved through your own effort: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works" (Ephesians 2:8-9). God has already reached out in love to rescue you. Much like the father who rescued his son after the earthquake, God went to the limit to make a way out of the lost situation we all were in--"while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). God's sinless Son died on the cross and took the punishment our sins deserved "Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God" (1 Peter 3:18). To be saved from the condemnation our sin has placed us all in, you must agree with God that you have sinned and that your only hope for rescue is through Jesus Christ's death...in your place The Bible says "there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). Now, because of a Father's love you can experience the ultimate salvation from an otherwise hopeless situation. Receiving Jesus by faith as your substitute places you into a loving, forgiven relationship with God as your Father, and with eternal life as your welcome gift into his family

Skateboarding down the cul-de-sac in front of our home, my 10-year-old son was enjoying a warm, sunny morning of vacation from school. Jordan had just completed fourth grade two days earlier and was looking forward to a summer filled with golf, swimming, and friends. I was inside the house when I heard one of those awful screams that a mother knows and dreads. Feeling my adrenaline level at an all-time high, I bolted outside to find Jordan lying in the middle of the street, groaning in pain and shock. He had experienced a freak fall off his skateboard, and although we didn't know it at the time, his left femur (the largest bone in his body) had snapped in two. Realizing that I could not get Jordan to the hospital myself, I called an ambulance and sat down next to him, trying to remain calm on the outside until help came. I felt rather helpless--the only physical comfort I could offer him was my presence. After X-rays in the emergency room, the orthopedic surgeon was called and plans were made for Dr. Watt to operate the next day. While my husband stayed with Jordan, I made a short trip home that evening to pick up some things we needed at the hospital. My previous composure dissolved when I walked into my son's bedroom and looked at all his treasures and projects, and I had a good, long cry. It had been a serious accident, but I was grateful that he was alive. I drove back to the hospital and spent the night with Jordan. Several times I drifted off to sleep and then woke up, hearing his faint "M-m-o-m-m?" When I jumped up, he explained that he just wanted to know I was there. There's nothing like a mother's love at a time like that. A mother's love provides comfort, security, and encouragement to her children. The protective instinct I experience as a mom is so strong and fierce that I cannot imagine anyone who could possibly love my children more. And yet, there is! I can stay up with a child for a night or two, but only God never sleeps. I have bandaged many a scraped knee through the years, but only God can make those little knees heal. Over a burger and fries, I have carefully listened to the concerns of a teenage son, but only God can see and understand everything in that teen's mind and heart. I have the privilege of loving my children (although imperfectly) for a limited number of years. But the God who designed them--and me-- loves us perfectly. His love knows no limits. Yes, God cares about our fears, our scrapes, and our concerns. But much more than that, only he can bring healing to our hearts. The curious thing about the healing of our hearts is that our healing can take place only because of the wounds of God's Son. When Jesus hung and died for us on the cross, his death was not for his own sins, because he was sinless. His death was for our sins. "But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed." Isaiah 53:5 There has never been a more amazing act of love. Our sins brought him death, but his wounds bring us healing. When we come face to face with our need for healing and God's limitless love, we want him the way an injured child wants his mother. We cannot come to God on the basis of our good works, social standing, money, or education. A re-lationship with him cannot be earned. Rather, we come to God on the basis of what Christ has done and through our faith in him. When we place our faith in Jesus, we stand in the position of incred-ible privilege--we become children of God. Have you sensed your need for healing? Do you want to experience the presence of God? If you call out to him, in faith, he will come into your life with forgiveness, eternal life, and the security of his presence. If you would like to know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and Lord, just turn from your sin and receive him right now wherever you are. Simply pray something like this: Lord, thank you for sending Jesus Christ to die for my sins and rise from the dead so that I can know your forgiveness and live with you forever. I thank you that because of his wounds, my heart can be healed. Right now I ask Jesus to be my Savior so that I can live as a child of God with the assurance of heaven.

His unchanging love can free you to be all you're meant to be. You can be sure of God's love if you will: Recognize that your sin separates you from God: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Realize that God loves you, and believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins: "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). Receive Him into your life by faith: "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord, ' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9).

One Easter as I read through the story of the crucifixion, I spent several hours deliberating over the words of Christ when He cried in anguish from the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken Me?" The idea that the Father would allow His Son to suffer the torture of crucifixion is beyond me... the humiliation of nakedness, the searing pain, the smell of blood and sweat, the agony of tears, the spit of drunken soldiers, the scorn of a laughing, jeering mob. When the crowd thinned and the cowards took shelter from the lashing storm, Jesus was left alone. As tears mingled with blood on His battered face, He cried out to His Father-the One who had not once turned away from Him in all of eternity. The reply was cold, unmoving silence. In those horrible moments God Himself poured the judgment for our sins upon Jesus. Every sin imaginable: lusting and lying... cheating and coveting... murder and hypocrisy... cruelty and deceit. Of course, Christ had never been guilty of any of those sins. But we are. And every one of your sins and mine was racked up on His account right there on that cross. As the prophet testified: Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows... . He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. -Isaiah 53:4a, 5-6 So where was God's goodness in treating Christ so? Where was the Father's kindness in turning His back on His only Son while Jesus cried out in horror and grief? On that terrible, wonderful day, God's goodness and kindness were directed toward you. God forsook His own Son... so that He would never have to forsake you! And because of those dark hours two thousand years ago, God can say to me, "I will never leave you. I will never forsake you." As I pondered that amazing thought, I felt ashamed. The goodness of God was indeed leading me to repentance. To think that God's anger for my sins was poured out on Christ-and that He has no anger left for me! You know what that makes me want to do? Praise Him. Thank Him. Honor Him. Obey Him with all my heart and soul and mind. Unlike Christ, I will never have to agonize over separation from my Father. And neither will you. God poured the full measure of His wrath-the terrors of eternal hell-on His own Son... so that you and I could be adopted into His very family. That's how much He loves you. And me. "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord, ' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9).
