From the author of Lovecraft Country: Myth and reality collide on a college campus “in a comic fantasy of wonderful energy, invention, and generosity of spirit” (Alison Lurie). Stephen Titus George is a young writer-in-residence at Cornell University in upstate New York. A bestselling author in search of a new story, he sees his life as a modern-day fairy tale starring himself as a would-be knight trying to woo a lovely maiden—or, actually, two: the bewitching Calliope and his guiding light, Aurora Borealis Smith. But he’s not quite in control of the narrative. There’s another writer with even greater influence on campus. The unseen Mr. Sunshine is an eternal, semi-retired deity who’s been fashioning his own story for centuries. He has all his characters in place: dragons, sprites, gnomes, and villains. And now, finally, his hero. As Mr. Sunshine’s world comes to fabulous and violent life, how can Stephen decide his own fate if it’s already being plotted by a god? An epic of life and death, good and evil, love and sorcery, Fool on the Hill lands Matt Ruff happily on the shelf between Tom Robbins and J. R. R. Tolkien for every lover of the “funky and fantastical” (New York magazine). “Inspired . . . rich in flavorful language . . . [a] dazzling tour de force.” —San Francisco Chronicle “The plot comes together like a brilliant clockwork toy.” —Locus

The stories are legendary, the characters unforgettable, the world horrible and disturbing. Howard Phillips Lovecraft may have been a writer for only a short time, but the creations he left behind after his death in 1937 have shaped modern horror more than any other author in the last two centuries: the shambling god Cthulhu, and the other deities of the Elder Things, the Outer Gods, and the Great Old Ones, and Herbert West, Reanimator, a doctor who unlocked the secrets of life and death at a terrible cost. In Lovecraft Unbound, more than twenty of today's most prominent writers of literature and dark fantasy tell stories set in or inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft.

H. P. Lovecraft (1890 - 1937) was the most important American horror fiction writer of the first half of the 20th century whose fiction, especially about the Cthulhu Mythos universe, spanned both time and space. He never achieved financial success; however, he did become good friends with several big writers, notably Robert Bloch (Psycho) and Robert E. Howard of Conan fame. The "Cthulhu Mythos" grew out of the Lovecraft Circle, a writing group where everyone shared in Lovecraft's Mythos stories. The most famous of these were "The Call of Cthulhu" and "At the Mountains of Madness". Many novels and stories have come from his Mythos tales, one of the most famous being The Necronomicon, written by the "Mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred, which first appeared in Lovecraft's story "The Hound". Lovecraft's health and financial situation began to fail seriously in the mid-1930s. He died in 1937 of cancer of the intestine, never knowing what a giant of the horror genre he was to become.

The Night Ocean is a fascinating anthology that navigates the depths of cosmic horror and the chilling mysteries of the sea, echoing the grandeur and terror characteristic of both Lovecraftian and maritime literature. The collection spans an array of literary forms, including short stories, letters, and speculative essays, each immersing readers into a world where reality blurs with the surreal and the unimaginable lurks beneath the waves. The narratives, characterized by their brooding atmospheres and intricate mythos, are unified by themes of isolation, existential dread, and the sublime indifference of the universe. Highlighted pieces delve into ancient myths reimagined for a modern audience, inviting readers to ponder what lies beyond the veil of known reality. Curated by the formidable minds of Howard Phillips Lovecraft and his close literary confidant Robert Hayward Barlow, The Night Ocean brings together a compelling blend of early 20th-century speculative fiction. Lovecraft, often hailed as the architect of contemporary horror, alongside Barlow—whose keen interest in anthropology and folklore enriches the collection—craft narratives that are as insightful as they are unsettling. Drawing from the cultural and literary zeitgeist of their time, these authors weave narratives that echo with the philosophical concerns of modernity, making this collection a testament to their literary legacies and influence on speculative fiction. The Night Ocean offers readers an unparalleled journey through a mosaic of hauntings and wonder, masterfully bringing together multiple perspectives and approaches within a single volume. The anthology invites both seasoned enthusiasts and new explorers of the genre to immerse themselves in its pages, appreciating its educational value and the complex dialogues it initiates. By engaging with the works within, readers encounter a synthesis of terror and beauty, guided by voices that continue to resonate within the ever-expanding universe of speculative fiction, making it a must-read for those looking to deepen their understanding of horror's rich, multifaceted landscape.
