BackgroundFujimori (1997) noted that the duration spent at each stage of the grief model when saying farewell and the order of passing through the stages varies according to the object to be lost or the approximate situation. As pet loss, young peopleu2019s breakups, and so on have become social phenomena in recent years, it seems that recovery varies according to the type of farewell. In this study, we aimed to compare psychological responses to different loss situations, focusing on pet losses and loss of lover which everyone could have experience.MethodsThe participants were two people: one who had parting with a pet and the other has experienced parting with a lover. Both were male students in their twenties.They were interviewed and the contents were taken down verbatim. The analysis used the grounded theory approach (Saiki, 2013).FindingsThe analysis generated 18 categories for each situation.Table 2 shows a list of generated categories, with the five common psychological responses between the two situations shown in gray. Based on these categories, we have presented a three-part process model: a pet, a lover, and those common to a pet/lover.Losing a pet may lead to healing with positive changes. On the other hand, it can be difficult to heal after farewell with a lover, but it is possible to avoid deep depression.DiscussionA person is likely to experience both u2018a surprise about a sudden unexpected farewellu2019 and u2018a sense of loss due to the loneliness of farewellu2019 grief reactions simultaneously.In order to cope with these problems, it is important to repeat such methods as u2018reflecting on the process from encounter to farewellu2019 and u2018treat depression by consulting with othersu2019 during the healing process.In other words, self-insight and talking to other people work complementarily to heal from the farewell. The Kama Sutra is an ancient Indian Hindu text widely considered to be the standard work on human sexual behavior in Sanskrit literature written by Vatsyayana.
