With an introduction by the author of Circe and The Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller In Lucky Alice Sebold reveals how her life was irrevocably changed when, as an eighteen-year-old college freshman, she was raped and beaten inside a tunnel near her campus. In this same tunnel, a girl had been raped and dismembered. By comparison, Alice was told by police, she was lucky. Though Alice’s friends and family try their best to offer understanding and support, in the end it is Alice’s formidable spirit which resonates most in these pages. In a narrative both painful and inspiring, Alice Sebold shines a light on the true experience of violent trauma. Sebold’s redemption turns out to be as hard-won as it is real.

This is the first systematic, historical inquiry into the emergence of "victim consciousness" (higaisha ishiki) as an essential component of Japanese pacifist national identity after World War II. In his meticulously crafted narrative and analysis, the author reveals how postwar Japanese elites and American occupying authorities collaborated to structure the parameters of remembrance of the war, including the notion that the emperor and his people had been betrayed and duped by militarists. He goes on to explain the Japanese reliance on victim consciousness through a discussion of the ban-the-bomb movement of the mid-1950s, which raised the prominence of Hiroshima as an archetype of war victimhood and brought about the selective focus on Japanese war victimhood; the political strategies of three self-defined war victim groups (A-bomb victims, repatriates, and dispossessed landlords) to gain state compensation and hence valorization of their war victim experiences; shifting textbook narratives that reflected contemporary attitudes and structured future generations' understanding of the war; and three classic antiwar novels and films that contributed to the shaping of a "sentimental humanism" that continues to leave a strong imprint on the collective Japanese conscience.

Victim F written by Denise Huskins and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-08 with True Crime categories.

The shocking true story of a bizarre kidnapping and the victims' re-victimization by the justice system. In March 2015, Denise Huskins and her boyfriend Aaron Quinn awoke from a sound sleep into a nightmare. Armed men bound and drugged them, then abducted Denise. Warned not to call the police or Denise would be killed. Aaron agonized about what to do. Finally he put his trust in law enforcement and dialed 911. But instead of searching for Denise, the police accused Aaron of her murder. His story, they told him, was just unbelievable. When Denise was released alive, the police turned their fire on her, dubbing her the “real-life ‘Gone Girl’” who had faked her own kidnapping. In Victim F, Aaron and Denise recount the horrific ordeal that almost cost them everything. Like too many victims of sexual violence, they were dismissed, disbelieved, and dragged through the mud. With no one to rely on except each other, they took on the victim blaming, harassment, misogyny, and abuse of power running rife in the criminal justice system. Their story is, in the end, a love story, but one that sheds necessary light on sexual assault and the abuse by law enforcement that all too frequently compounds crime victims’ suffering.

Victim written by Karen Moe and has been published by Vigilance Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-02 with Social Science categories.

Imagine being a carefree, independent young woman enjoying life. Your bold, adventurous spirit pulls you to travel to distant locales. Then out of nowhere, you’re abducted, assaulted, and raped. That is the terror-filled experience that Karen Moe survived almost thirty years ago. But this is not a crime story. This is not even just a survivor's tale. Instead, this is a manifesto. In dialogue with other feminists and through case studies from around the world, Moe uses her trauma to shine a light on how not only violence against women, but all exploitation, is a natural result of patriarchal hierarchy. Yes, this is Moe’s story of triumph over violence, but it is also a call-to-action for both men and women. The ultimate goal of Victim: A Feminist Manifesto from a Fierce Survivor is to provide tools for resistance against a culture of exploitation. “In the end, what I have suffered and survived has given me a gift... Now, resistance, fighting for justice, is what I live for. My life is far bigger than myself.” "A bold and well-constructed work that takes on difficult topics in a compelling way."—Kirkus Review. "Without false optimism, Karen Moe writes of how we can find authentic hope."— Robert Jensen author of The End of Patriarchy: Radical Feminism for Men. "This book is a call to action for all of us—women and men. You will want to put it down, but you can’t, because it’s so compelling.” —Marie McKenzie, #1 Amazon bestselling author of Things That Keep Me Up At Night. “Victim is Karen Moe’s impassioned manifesto … Victim is visceral. It is a difficult book to put down. And it is a compelling must-read!” —Victor Malarek, author of The Johns: Sex for Sale and the Men who Buy It. “A tour de force true story of surviving and surmounting the unthinkable. Victim is literary nonfiction at its best."—Sally Clark, author of The Way of The Warrior Mama: The Guide To Raising and Protecting Strong Daughters.

Society, once prosperous and free, has degraded to a state of chaos and disorder by crooked police and rich politicians. The leaders of the world have driven their countries into poverty and decay with the threat of nuclear war hanging in the air. Scandal and heavy government regulation threaten the very lives of the churches that once taught quality morals, standards, and ethics to the believers and the faithful. Oppressive taxes, massive unemployment, unjust courts, and uncontrolled population explosions reek havoc upon the economy and the citizens, spawning violence that is killing thousands. Lucifer, the fallen angel of God, walks freely among us as the wealthy businessman Mep Deville. Deville Inc has nurtured and cultivated the greed and desires of those in power. Mep then offers to cure those societal ills with a prescription of fine gold bouillon that will cost those making a deal with their souls. Ultimately, the goal of all the bribes, payoffs, and murders is to allow Mep Deville to enter the mortal world and seize the power of God for himself. Six men of various denominations, six men holy and pure in the light and love of God, are chosen by Heaven to take the one holy book of life that tells of all creation, The Book of God, to a long, hidden, and forgotten temple of the Archangel Michael that covers the entrance to Hell and damnation. Tasked with stopping the lord of Hell, these holy men must survive the servants of evil while facing their fears and resisting their own mortal weaknesses and temptations. The rise of Lucifer, Armageddon, the second coming of Christ, and Judgment Day awaits failure. Can Lucifer be denied the power that drives him to become our God?
