Esta monografía estudia la tradición clásica del De rerum natura de Lucrecio en la literatura española, desde Isidoro de Sevilla hasta la actualidad. Esta joya de la Antigüedad ha sido el poema didáctico por excelencia de la literatura latina junto con los Georgica de Virgilio. En ella Lucrecio expuso la filosofía de Epicuro a fin de liberar a los hombres del miedo a la muerte y a los dioses. Cuando Poggio Bracciolini redescubrió el texto en 1417, la obra se convirtió en el enquiridión más leído de la Escuela del Jardín, comenzando entonces una nueva trayectoria, plagada de reconocimientos; pero también de polémica por sus tesis heréticas. Su proyección en la cultura occidental ha sido inmensa y, concretamente, su fortuna en España, sin igualar la de Horacio o Séneca, ha sido también considerable. El estudio ofrece, en este sentido, claves para comprender por qué un clásico tan poco afín a la historia de nuestro país, baluarte del catolicismo, ha dejado, aun así, una impronta valiosa.

En ella, LUCRECIO (ca. 98-ca. 55 a.C.), quien se proclama discípulo de Epicuro, expone las teorías físicas con él asociadas y defiende la idea de que el mundo y todo cuanto en él se contiene es pura materia regida por unas leyes mecanicistas que gobiernan los movimientos de esas minúsculas partículas llamadas «átomos». Prologado, traducido y anotado por Miguel Castillo Bejarano, el poema admirado por figuras como Voltaire, Goethe o Leopardi alcanza asimismo en numerosos pasajes cotas de sublime inspiración poética.
