Milena Dragovic, Restauratorin aus Weimar, hat einen Auftrag im südthüringischen Henneberger Museum in Kloster Veßra übernommen. Dort war bei Restaurierungsarbeiten ein stark beschädigtes Wandbild aus dem frühen 13. Jahrhundert freigelegt worden. Inzwischen ist ein weiterer Toter aufgetaucht, diesmal in der Felsenwelt oberhalb der Ruine der Hallenburg in Steinbach-Hallenberg. Wieder ist der ominöse Tote ohne erkennbare Todesursache aufgefunden worden. Der Lokalreporter des »Rennsteig-Kuriers«, Tom Hainkel und die örtlichen Kriminalisten aus Suhl stocherten im Nebel. Ein undurchsichtiges Geflecht aus Steuerhinterziehung und Kreditbetrug beschäftigt den zum Leiter einer neuen Sonderkommission ernannten Kommissar Theo Linthdorf. Quer durch ganz Brandenburg ziehen sich die Spuren diverser Scheinfirmen, die durch geschickte Transaktionen riesige Geldsummen ergaunern und die Behörden an der Nase herumführen. Die Ermittlungen führen Linthdorf schließlich auf ein altes Landgut im Norden Berlins. Unerklärlicherweise ereignen sich dort mehrere, ominöse Todesfälle. Eine Frau stirbt bei einem Verkehrsunfall, einem jungen Manne wird der Kopf abgetrennt, ein Steuerberater ertrinkt im Uferwasser eines Sees und ein einsiedlerischer Maler wird auf einem alten Friedhof zu Tode erschreckt. Die Begleitumstände der Todesfälle sind mysteriös. Da ist vor allem das Erscheinen der Weißen Frau, einem alten Spuk aus dem Mittelalter, und es gibt auch noch die vielen massakrierten Kraniche, die überall im Umfeld des Gutes entdeckt werden, die Linthdorf Stoff zum Grübeln geben. Ein Sumpf aus Intrigen wird sichtbar. Die handelnden Personen sind allesamt in einem eigenartigen Abhängigkeitsverhältnis in diesem Sumpf gefangen. Es ist eine mühselige Arbeit für den Kommissar und seine Mitarbeiter.

Und schließlich erlebt er kurz vor Weihnachten ein etwas anderes Adventswochenende in einem einsamen Motel, das wegen eines Schneesturms zur Notunterkunft für ein paar seltsame Gäste wird. Dazu taucht immer wieder eine wohlschmeckende Köstlichkeit auf, die Linthdorf bezaubert. Limettengelee, mal auf Eis, mal auf Joghurt, mal im Glas ... Was es mit dem Limettengelee auf sich hat, wird noch nicht verraten.
