In der Alltagssprache verweist »Luft« auf das Unsichtbare, Unstete, Irreal-Phantastische. Historisch fand die Vorstellung vom »Luftmenschen« in einem überraschend breiten, wenig erforschten Diskurs um 1900 Resonanz. Vor allem die Wahrnehmung jüdischer Existenz in der Moderne wurde derart bebildert. Dafür schien die diasporische Lebensrealität der Juden ebenso zu sprechen wie die notorisch kritisierte soziale Verortung, bestimmte Berufsmuster oder andere als »typisch jüdisch« wahrgenommene Gemeinsamkeiten. Aber auch ganz allgemeine Phänomene der Zeit wie Migration und Verstädterung wurden mit der Metapher vom »Luftmenschen« kritisch von vermeintlich natürlicher Verwurzelung abgerückt. Nicolas Bergs Buch über Entstehung und Bedeutungswandel der Metapher Luftmensch geht diesen Zusammenhängen von symbolischer Rede und essentialistisch interpretierter Realität in ganz unterschiedlichen Kontexten nach. Anhand von Beispielen aus Theologie, Philosophie, Ökonomie, Wissenschaft und Literatur wird deutlich, wie sich die Kennzeichnung jüdischer Existenz als »Luftvolk« von der Selbstironie ihrer Begriffsursprünge löste, immer stärker in das Arsenal antisemitischer Polemik einwanderte und schließlich zu einer Begründungsfigur der gegen Juden gerichteten Politik um »Lebensraum« werden konnte.

Memoirs of Jewish life in the east European shtetl often recall the hekdesh (town poorhouse) and its residents: beggars, madmen and madwomen, disabled people, and poor orphans. Stepchildren of the Shtetl tells the story of these marginalized figures from the dawn of modernity to the eve of the Holocaust. Combining archival research with analysis of literary, cultural, and religious texts, Natan M. Meir recovers the lived experience of Jewish society's outcasts and reveals the central role that they came to play in the drama of modernization. Those on the margins were often made to bear the burden of the nation as a whole, whether as scapegoats in moments of crisis or as symbols of degeneration, ripe for transformation by reformers, philanthropists, and nationalists. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many Jews from Central and Eastern Europe arrived in New York City, where they did not only find a new home, but far away from their shtetl origin, the new members of the American society also began to politically radicalize. There has been a discussion in the literature related to the field, where, how, and why the Jewish population radicalized. This study analyses two waves of radicalization: one related to the American environment that is responsible for the described process at the end of the 19th century; one, related to the developments in Eastern Europe during the early decades of the 20th century. For both radicalization processes this book compares the reasons, elements, and aims of those who join radical movements to show that there is a transatlantic perspective that links both processes to each other.

Die deutsch-jüdische Debatte, die im Laufe des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts über den Autor des "Nathan" und Freund Moses Mendelssohns geführt wurde, folgte ganz unterschiedlichen Vorstellungen und Rezeptionsvorgaben. Dabei kam es immer wieder zu neuen, bislang nur unzureichend erforschten Formen der Achtung oder Missachtung, der Aneignung oder Verwerfung. Der vorliegende Band will diese verschlungenen Wege nachzeichnen und Lessing nicht nur von den Kontexten her begreifen, sondern auch umgekehrt diese über ihn erschließen. Viele Diskurse, die von Juden und Judentum handeln, waren an seiner singulären Position orientiert und boten sich zu eigener Profilierung ebenso wie zur Selbstvergewisserung an. Eine solche doppelte Perspektivierung führt zu einer weiteren Pluralisierung des Lessingbildes sowie zu einer stärkeren Ausdifferenzierung von Mentalitäten, Denkgewohnheiten, Klischees und Dispositiven auf dem weiten und – trotz großer Forschungsanstrengungen – keineswegs hinreichend vermessenen Feld deutsch-jüdischer (Literatur-)Geschichte. Der Sammelband eröffnet eine neue Schriftenreihe, die wissenschaftliche Beiträge der Lessing-Forschung und Berichte aus der Arbeit des Lessing-Museums in Kamenz vereinen wird. The 19th-century German-Jewish debate about the author of Nathan and his friend Moses Mendelssohn, followed very different conceptions and parameters of reception. This repeatedly involved forms of respect and contempt, of appropriation and rejection, which have as yet been insufficiently studied. This volume seeks to trace these intricate pathways and not only to understand Lessing in terms of their contexts but also conversely to understand these contexts of Lessing. Many discourses involving Jews and Judaism were oriented to his singular position and presented the opportunity for the creation of an individual image and also for self-assurance. Such a double perspectivation leads to a further pluralisation of our image of Lessing and to a strong differentiation of mentalities, ways of thinking, clichés and dispositifs in a wider and – despite great efforts in research – still by no means sufficiently surveyed field of German-Jewish (literary) history. This volume of essays is the first in a new series which will bring together research and reports from the work of the Lessing Museum in Kamenz.
