Aus diesem Grund mag es auch wenig verwundern, dass heutige Religionssoziologen auf eine lange Tradition innerhalb ihres Faches zurückgreifen können. Wie später noch zu zeigen sein wird, beschäftigten sich fast alle Klassiker der Soziologie intensiv mit dem Thema Religion. Doch so selbstverständlich wie uns eine wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Thema heute erscheinen mag, war sie in der Geschichte des Abendlandes keineswegs. Das "moderne" religionswissenschaftliche Denken ist das Ergebnis eines langwierigen Prozesses. Eine Aufgabe dieser Seminararbeit will es sein, den Beitrag Niklas Luhmanns im Rahmen seiner Systemtheorie zu diesem Prozess zu untersuchen. Um diese Fragestellung adäquat bearbeiten zu können wird sich der erste Teil dieser Ausarbeitung mit den historischen Entwicklungen hin zu einer allgemeinen Religionssoziologie und deren Probleme befassen, um im Anschluss die systemtheoretische Sicht auf die Funktion der Religion zu erarbeiten. Mit diesen Vorarbeiten soll im letzten Teil dieser Ausarbeitung ein Versuch gelingen, innerhalb Luhmanns Theoriegebäude eine Vorstellung von Moral und deren Folgen für eine Ethik 'nach' Luhmann zu entwerfen. Im Gesamten soll so eine Seiten- und Direktbeleuchtung der Systemtheorie Niklas Luhmanns entstehen

A Systems Theory of Religion, still unfinished at Niklas Luhmann's death in 1998, was first published in German two years later thanks to the editorial work of André Kieserling. One of Luhmann's most important projects, it exemplifies his later work while redefining the subject matter of the sociology of religion. Religion, for Luhmann, is one of the many functionally differentiated social systems that make up modern society. All such subsystems consist entirely of communications and all are "autopoietic," which is to say, self-organizing and self-generating. John Rawls's influential theory of justice and public reason has often been thought to exclude religion from politics, out of fear of its illiberal and destabilizing potentials. This is not a book that provides a new integrated theory of religious change in modern societies, but rather one that develops theoretical elements that contribute to the understanding of some contemporary religious developments. Most of the approaches in sociology of religion are prone to emphasize either processes of religious decline or of religious upswing. For example, secularization theory usually includes a couple of relevant factors--such as functional differentiation, economic affluence or social equality--in order to account for religious change. However, the result of such a theory's empirical analyses seems to be certain in advance, namely that the social relevance of religion is decreasing. In contrast, the religious market model devised by sociologists of religion in the US is inclined to detect everywhere processes of religious upsurge. Religion and Modernity: An International Comparison avoids a purely theoretically based perspective on religious changes. For this reason, Detlef Pollack and Gergely Rosta do not begin with theoretical propositions but with questions. The authors raise the question of how the social significance of religion in its various facets has changed in modern societies, and explain what factors and conditions have contributed to these changes.
