Poco se sabe de Luís Vaz de Camões o Camoens, escritor y poeta portugués (10 de junio de 1524 – 10 de junio de 1580), generalmente considerado como el mayor poeta en lengua portuguesa. También autor de alguna obra en castellano, algo propio de su época. Posiblemente nacido en Lisboa, tampoco se sabe cuándo y dónde adquirió su enorme bagaje cultural, aunque es posible que tuviera una larga estancia en Coimbra. Se sabe que regresó a Lisboa, llevando una vida bohemia y con varios amores, no sólo con damas de la corte, sino hasta con la propia infanta doña María, hermana del rey Manuel I de Portugal. En 1553, tras haber sido preso por un altercado, parte a la India, y este es uno de los pocos hechos de su vida que los documentos corroboran. Se asentó en la ciudad de Goa dónde habría escrito gran parte de su obra. Regresó a Portugal, pero por el camino naufragó en las costas de Mozambique y fue forzado, por falta de medios, a quedarse allí. Fue en Mozambique dónde su amigo Diogo do Couto lo encontró, encuentro que se relata en su obra: "tan pobre que vivía de los amigos". Fue Diogo do Couto quien le pagó el viaje hasta Lisboa, a dónde llegó finalmente en 1569. Pobre y enfermo, consiguió publicar Os Lusíadas en 1572 gracias a las influencias de algunos amigos cercanos al rey Sebastián I de Portugal. Pero incluso la publicación de Os Lusíadas está envuelta en misterio - hay dos ediciones del mismo año y no se sabe cual fue la primera. En cuanto a su obra lírica, el volumen de sus rimas le fue robado. Así, la obra lírica de Camões fue publicada póstumamente, no habiendo acuerdo entre los diferentes editores en cuanto al número de sonetos escritos por el poeta. Hay diferentes ediciones líricas camonianas y no hay una completa certeza en cuanto a la autoría de algunas de las piezas líricas. Falleció en Lisboa en 10 de junio de 1580 y un amigo tuvo que pagar la sepultura. Su túmulo, que habría sido colocado cerca del convento de Santa Ana en Lisboa, se perdió en el terremoto de 1755, por lo que se ignora el paradero de sus restos mortales. Restos mortales que no están en ninguno de los dos túmulos oficiales que le están dedicados actualmente - uno en el monasterio de los Jerónimos en Lisboa y otro en el Panteón Nacional. Se le considera el mayor poeta portugués, situándose su obra entre el clasicismo y el manierismo. Algunos de sus sonetos, como el conocido Amor é fogo (Amor es fuego), por el uso de las paradojas, anuncia ya el barroco que se aproximaba. El Premio Luis de Camoes es el más importante en lengua portuguesa. Fue instituido en 1988 por los gobiernos de Brasil y Portugal.
