INTRODUCCIÓN A LA SABIDURÍA En unas seiscientas máximas morales nos ofrece el humanista Juan Luis Vives una visión de conjunto de su “filosofía”, que es ante todo una ética, cuyos fundamentos están en la filosofía griega, especialmente en Aristóteles y la ética estoica, y en el pensamiento cristiano. El pensamiento de Vives, que se nos ofrece en esta obra, es la “sabiduría” de los humanistas, es decir una filosofía de la vida y para la vida: para vivir bien y bien vivir. Según sus palabras la sabiduría consiste en juzgar rectamente de las cosas de modo que consideremos a cada una tal cual es; no tomemos las viles por preciosas ni rechacemos las preciosas como viles. El fundamento de su ética, como para Aristóteles, es la virtud: La reina y la más principal y excelente de todas las cosas es la virtud. EL SABIO Es un diálogo, en el que uno de los personajes es el mismo Vives. En él hace una crítica del estado en que se encontraban las distintas “ciencias” que eran objeto de la enseñanza en París. Es un diálogo ameno y a la vez profundo.

By looking at rhetoric and politics, this book offers a novel account of Juan Luis Vives’ intellectual oeuvre. It argues that Vives adjusted rhetorical theory to a monarchical context in which direct speech was not a possibility, demonstrated how Erasmian languages of ethical self-government and political peace were actualised rhetorically and critically in a princely environment, and finally, rethought the cognitive and emotional foundations of humanist rhetoric in his late and famous De anima et vita (1538). Ultimately, towards the end of his life, Vives epitomised a distinctively cognitive view of politics; he maintained that political concord was not a direct outcome of institutional or legal reform or of the spiritual transformation of the Christian world (an optimistic Erasmian interpretation) but that concord could only be upheld once the dynamics of emotions that motivated political action were understood and controlled through responsible rhetoric that respected decorum and civility.
