Recent studies of humanities methods and theory have drawn attention to the ambiguity of disciplinary boundaries and the need to develop interdisciplinary approaches. Nevertheless, collective works on literature are still mainly composed on the basis of a shared disciplinary paradigm, and comprised of authors who are associated with a common methodological approach. “Testo e Metodo” (in Italian) is a bold attempt to assemble research which was undertaken according to different theoretical frameworks. Scholars from Italy, Estonia and France explore the results of applying philological, historic-critical, philosophical, semiotic, geocritical, and anthropological conceptual tools to literary texts. The common rationale of all the contributions is a critical attention to the conceptual arsenal and the epistemological limits that it imposes on the research with regard to specific texts. Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore, nato dall’elaborazione scenica di due novelle, Personaggi, del 1906, e Tragedia d’un personaggio, del 1911, è forse il più famoso dei capolavori teatrali di Pirandello, il primo e più celebre della “Trilogia del teatro nel teatro”. In esso trovano magistrale composizione alcuni temi cari all’autore siciliano: il tragico contrasto tra l’identità e l’apparenza imposta dal ruolo sociale e il fragile confine fra realtà e rappresentazione. Il tutto è magistralmente giocato in un “dietro le quinte” rovesciato, in cui i personaggi (il Padre, la Madre, la Figliastra, il Figlio, il Giovinetto e la Bambina) rivendicano contro l’autore, qui il Capocomico, la verità del proprio dramma, consegnata nella forma della rappresentazione all’immutabilità degli eventi di cui sono protagonisti. «Quale autore potrà mai dire come e perché un personaggio gli sia nato nella fantasia? Il mistero della creazione artistica è il mistero stesso della nascita naturale. Può una donna, amando, desiderare di diventar madre; ma il desiderio da solo, per intenso che sia, non può bastare.» Luigi Pirandello nato ad Agrigento nel 1867, si laureò a Bonn in filologia nel 1891, rientrò in Italia e nel 1892 si trasferì a Roma, dove, introdotto da Capuana, iniziò la sua attività letteraria e teatrale. Nel 1903, l’improvviso crac finanziario della famiglia distrusse l’equilibrio mentale già fragile della moglie e ridusse lui a pensare al suicidio; si risollevò poi grazie al suo lavoro d’insegnante e dedicandosi sempre più intensamente alla scrittura. Nel 1934 gli fu assegnato il premio Nobel per la letteratura. Morì a Roma nel 1936. Di Luigi Pirandello la Newton Compton ha pubblicato Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore; L’umorismo; L’esclusa; Il fu Mattia Pascal; Uno, nessuno e centomila e Quaderni di Serafino Gubbio operatore, Questa sera si recita a soggetto e Ciascuno a suo modo, oltre al volume singolo I romanzi, le novelle e il teatro.
