Nell’aprile del 1927, D.H. Lawrence, che abitava con la sua compagna Frieda Weekley a villa Mirenda a Scandicci, intraprende con l’amico Earl Brewster un appassionato pellegrinaggio nei luoghi etruschi. Partendo da una visita al museo di Villa Giulia a Roma, i due amici raggiungono Cerveteri, Tarquinia, Vulci e Volterra. Il resoconto di questo viaggio rimasto incompiuto (Lawrence si proponeva di visitare anche Chiusi, Cortona, Civita Castellana, Norchia, Vetulonia, Bieda – l’attuale Blera) fu pubblicato un anno dopo la sua morte, nel 1932. Il libro, snobbato dagli etruscologi e poco letto in Italia, è ben altro che un libro di viaggio e contiene, forse più dei romanzi, l’espressione più viva e articolata della sua visione del mondo. Nelle pitture delle tombe di Tarquinia, nelle necropoli tagliate nella roccia, nelle pareti scolpite di peperino che precipitano a picco su un corso d’acqua, il suo sguardo non cercava soltanto opere d’arte o testimonianze di una grande cultura dimenticata. Lawrence – così lo descrive Rebecca West – viaggiava «in una sorta di estatica agonia», cercando quella «visione apocalittica dell’umanità» che era la sola cosa che gli interessasse. In questione in questo libro straordinario non è, come si continua stancamente a ripetere, l’esaltazione del sesso e della sensualità da parte di un malato ormai impotente: Luoghi etruschi è in verità un visionario messaggio politico, in cui ogni parola è rivolta contro quella «forza distruttrice dell’anima» che Lawrence descrive nell’Apocalisse pubblicata l’anno stesso delle sua morte: «Lo stato cristiano moderno è una forza distruttrice dell’anima, perché è formato di frammenti che non hanno un’interezza organica, ma solo un insieme collettivo... Una democrazia non può non risultare oscena, perchè composta di miriadi di frammenti disuniti, ognuno dei quali pretende di assumere per sè una falsa interezza, una falsa individualità. g.a. «I Greci cercavano di fare impressione, gli Etruschi no. Le cose che essi fecero nei loro facili secoli sono naturali e facili come il respiro. Lasciavano che il respiro uscisse libero e agevole con una certa dose di vitalità. Anche le tombe. E queste sono le vere qualità etrusche: facilità, naturalezza, abbondanza di vita e nessun bisogno di forzare la mente e lo spirito in una qualsiasi direzione. E la morte, per gli Etruschi, era una piacevole continuazione della vita, coi gioielli e il vino e i flauti che sonavano per la danza. Non era nè un’estasi di felicità, un paradiso, nè un purgatorio di tormento. Era soltanto la naturale continuazione della pienezza di vita».

CERVETERI THE Etruscans, as everyone knows, were the people who occupied the middle of Italy in early Roman days, and whom the Romans, in their usual neighbourly fashion, wiped out entirely in order to make room for Rome with a very big R. They couldn t have wiped them all out, there were too many of them. But they did wipe out the Etruscan existence as a nation and a people. However, this seems to be the inevitable result of expansion with a big E, which is the sole raison tTStre of people like the Romans. Now, we know nothing about the Etruscans except what we find in their tombs. There are references to them in Latin writers. But of first-hand knowledge we have nothing except what the tombs offer. So to the tombs we must go or to the museums containing the things that have been rifled from the tombs. Myself, the first time I consciously saw Etruscan things, in the museum at Perugia, I was instinctively attracted to them. And it seems to be that way. Either there is instant sympathy, or instant contempt and indifference. Most people despise everything B. C. that isn t Greek, for the good reason that it ought to be Greek if it isn t, So Etruscan things are put down ....
