Teos kertoo, keitä luovutetut olivat, mitä heille tapahtui, miten he joutuivat elämään ja miksi jotkut heistä kuolivat. Journalistinen dokumenttikirja jatkaa ja laajentaa Elina Sanan Kuoleman laiva s/s Hohenhörn -teoksessa avaamaa vaiettua ja arkaa aihetta. Luovutetut herätti ilmestyessään laajaa huomiota aina ulkomaita myöten. Suomen hallitus tilasi selvityksen ihmisluovutuksista emeritusprofessori Heikki Ylikankaalta. Silloinen pääministeri Matti Vanhanen päätti perustuttaa Suomen Kansallisarkiston alaisuuteen laajan akateemisen tutkimushankkeen, joka tarkensi kirjassa kuvattuja tapahtumia edelleen. Teos sai Sadankomitean Rauhanpalkinnon vuonna 2003 ja palkittiin Tieto-Finlandialla vuonna 2004.

Is research on antisemitism even necessary in countries with a relatively small Jewish population? Absolutely, as this volume shows. Compared to other countries, research on antisemitism in the Nordic countries (Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) is marginalized at an institutional and staffing level, especially as far as antisemitism beyond German fascism, the Second World War, and the Holocaust is concerned. Furthermore, compared to scholarship on other prejudices and minority groups, issues concerning Jews and anti-Jewish stereotypes remain relatively underresearched in Scandinavia – even though antisemitic stereotypes have been present and flourishing in the North ever since the arrival of Christianity, and long before the arrival of the first Jewish communities. This volume aims to help bring the study of antisemitism to the fore, from the medieval period to the present day. Contributors from all the Nordic countries describe the status of as well as the challenges and desiderata for the study of antisemitism in their respective countries.

Vuonna 1938 lähes 200 henkeä pakeni Hitlerin Saksan juutalaisvainoja Suomeen. 6.11.1942 Valtiollinen poliisi luovutti heistä kahdeksan Saksan Gestapolle. Höyrylaiva s/s Hohenhörnillä poiskuljetettujen viiden miehen, yhden naisen ja kahden lapsen uskottiin päätyneen vain työpalveluun entiseen kotimaahansa. Elina Sana kiinnostui juutalaispakolaisten vaiheista ja ryhtyi tutkimaan mm. Suomessa ja ulkomailla. Auschwitzin keskitysleirimuseosta löytyi viimein ratkaiseva ja raskauttava dokumentti: lähetyslista Suomen toimittamista kahdeksasta juutalaispakolaisesta. Heistä seitsemän sai surmansa natsien keskitysleirillä. Vain yhden tiedetään varmuudella selvinneen hengissä. Kuoleman laiva s/s Hohenhörn herätti aikanaan runsaasti keskustelua ja yhden oikeudenkäyntiuhkauksen. Teos sai ilmestyttyään Valtion Tiedonjulkistamispalkinnon. Elina Sana on myös palkittu Tieto-Finlandialla myöhemmästä teoksestaan Luovutetut, joka kertoo laajemmin muiden luovutettujen koskettavista kohtaloista.
