La isla canaria de Luranca, víctima de una maldición, es arrasada por la explosión su volcán, y la población es tragada por la tierra, cayendo en una gruta de la que no pueden salir, pues la única salida es una abertura inaccesible en la parte superior. El relato se inicia en 1492, en la conquista de la isla de La Palma (Benahoare) en Canarias, ordenada por Los Reyes Católicos. Pero la trama principal se desarrolla en isla Luranca (más tarde llamada San Borondón), de la que se cuenta que aparece y desaparece del horizonte en muchas ocasiones. La historia que se relata en este libro ocurre mucho antes de la conquista, y está contada por un anciano guanche a una niña. Este anciano acompañaba a los españoles durante la conquista de Tedote, capital del Menceyato del mismo nombre (hoy Santa Cruz de La Palma) Es una historia de superación ante la adversidad, teniendo como protagonista a un niño polifacético, muy inteligente, llamado Limbo, que nace en esa gruta y, desde pequeño, tiene una obsesión en su vida: salir de este encierro a toda costa, para conocer el mar, los árboles, la vida exterior, pero también para salvar a todos de esa maldición. Se apasiona por el estudio del vuelo de las gaviotas, que ve a través de la abertura superior.
