Focusing on Luther's relationship to the papal hierarchy, rather than to the personalities of individual popes, Luther's development as a reformer and the beginnings of the Reformation are studied. Luther emerges from this study as an advocate of the people against a papal hierarchy that was not fulfilling its obligation. --from publisher description.

The Ninety-five Theses or Disputation on the Power of Indulgences are a list of propositions for an academic disputation written in 1517 by Martin Luther, professor of moral theology at the University of Wittenberg, Germany, that started the Reformation, a schism in the Catholic Church which profoundly changed Europe. They advance Luther's positions against what he saw as the abuse of the practice of clergy selling plenary indulgences, which were certificates believed to reduce the temporal punishment for sins committed by the purchasers or their loved ones in purgatory. In the Theses, Luther claimed that the repentance required by Christ in order for sins to be forgiven involves inner spiritual repentance rather than merely external sacramental confession. He argued that indulgences led Christians to avoid true repentance and sorrow for sin, believing that they could forgo it by purchasing an indulgence.

In 1517, Martin Luther, the Germany theologian, tacked his ninety-five theses to the door of the Wittenberg church, thereby setting off the theological revolution that gave birth to the Reformation. Luther confronted a papal establishment headed by Leo X, the pleasure-loving son of Lorenzo de Medici who made the Vatican the glittering center of the Italian Renaissance and whose driving ambition was the completion of St. Peter's Cathedral. This book is, in part, a brilliant study of Luther and Pope Leo X, revealing two men of vastly different backgrounds, outlooks, and philosophies. The split in the Christian Church that was the inevitable result is dramatically portrayed. Written sure-handedly and in a lively fashion, the entire world of the Italian Renaissance comes alive. Charles L. Mee Jr., Harvard scholar and biographer, brings the Reformation into sharp new focus as he presents Luther as the typical revolutionary and Leo X as his establishment protagonist. He gives us an immensely illuminating, informed, lively, and gossipy account of history's pivotal figures and the turbulent times in which they lived. Altogether, this book offers an engrossing, biographical history.

"Edwards has...illuminat[ed] the reformer's thought and personality in a way that could never be achieved by studying the man's words alone. Future historians will identify Edwards's book as one of several that marked a turning point in Luther research. No one interested in the Reformation can afford to ignore it."? American Historical Review"Edwards turns his attention to...understanding Luther's often vitriolic campaigns against opposing princes, Jews, the papacy, and others.... This work is one of solid scholarship and long gestation that seeks to understand without condemning.... More important, Edwards has raised a number of questions about the relationship across time of Luther's deeds, his words, and his world. Such is the mark of good history and of those who write it."? This is Luther's direct letter and treatise to Pope Leo X on his religious beliefs and a bruising analysis of the Catholic church. Luther strongly objected to making a new law of the forms and urged the retention of other good liturgies. While advocating Christian liberty in liturgical matters, he also spoke out in favor of maintaining and establishing liturgical uniformity among those sharing the same faith in a given area. "Concerning Christian Liberty" is a wonderful piece on Luther's balance between the Catholic Church and his teachings on liberty.
