Excerpt from The Story of Lutheran Missions For many years there has been both a need and a call for a book on Lutheran missions, which could be used as a text book and also as a book of reference. Mrs. Lewars has met this need and answered this call with The Story of Lutheran Missions. It is fitting that this book should make its appearance in the Quadri-centennial Year of the Reformation and that it should be the first book issued by the first Co-operative Literature Committee of the Woman's Missionary Societies of the Lutheran Church, representing the General Synod, the General Council, and the United Synod in the South. The courage and devotion of our self-sacrificing missionary pioneers has been little known even among Lutherans. Our hearts must be thrilled as we read of the superb courage and the unselfish devotion of the brave men and women who, surrounded by indifference were fired with unquenchable missionary zeal to carrying the Word to the ends of the earth. "Through peril, toil and pain," they blazed the way for Protestant missions. May this study of the Reformation of the sixteenth century and the subsequent efforts to carry the Word into all of the world help to unite our Lutheran forces in a determined missionary purpose to hasten the transformation of the twentieth century. "Mission is nothing but the one church of God in motion." With these words the famous German Lutheran theologian Wilhelm Loehe described the essence of missionary work. Mission moves the church and crosses boundaries to form the one universal church. In 1842, Loehe started missionary work in the small Bavarian town of Neuendettelsau in southern Germany, as he sent two young men as "emergency helpers" to North America. He supported the formation of Lutheran congregations that later joined together to become the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS). Together with Friedrich Bauer he founded a mission seminary that sent, until 1985, nearly 900 graduates as pastors and missionaries not only to the USA, but also to Australia, Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Palestine. From this the present center Mission One World of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria developed, which maintains partnership relations to churches in Africa, Asia/Pacific, and Latin America. This book describes the history of this missionary movement up to the present time and puts the Bavarian missionary work into the context of mission theology and strategies in the twentieth century.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VIII. The Gossner (Berlin II.) Missionary Society in India. "Thou old Adam in me die!" "Live Lord Jesus!" The Gossner Society, though not strictly Lutheran, has a great many Lutherans in its service. Pastor Gossner organized the Society in order to train missionaries for different missions. The founder withdrew from the Berlin Society because his plain habits and practical spirit did not approve of the extensive educational methods, the commodious quarters for the students and the society. He held that missionaries ought to support themselves by industrial work. With these objects in view, he in 1836 undertook the instruction of young men, and by 1837 he had seven married and four single missionaries prepared to labor in the foreign field at their own expense. The first missionaries proceeded to South Australia, under the direction of Dr. Lang, a Scotch minister. The Scotch Church on the island promised to make up the deficiency in case the missionaries could not provide for their whole support. An effort to plant a Christian colony at Calcutta proved a failure. A second colony followed. While in that great city, uncertain which way to turn, the missionaries noticed men of a peculiar type among the coolies. Upon inquiry, they learned that they were Kols from Bengal. The missionaries, who had been sent to India with the impressive instructions of Gossner, --" Believe, hope, love, pray, burn, waken the dead! Hold fast by prayer! Wrestle like Jacob! Up, up, my brethren! The Lord is coming and to every one He will say, where hast thou left the souls of these heathen? With the devil? Oh, swiftly seek these souls, and enter not without them into the presence of the Lord; "--determined to labor among the long neglected Kols. They reached...
