Penyakit nyeri sendi osteoartritis kini merupakan penyakit yang menjadi masalah kesehatan masyarakat akibat peradaban modern. Perbaikan ekonomi suatu negara dan kesejahteraan rakyatnya, perubahan gaya hidup, pola makan, pola kerja, peningkatan kesehatan, namun juga diikuti dengan peningkatan polusi udara, air, dan tanah, telah berakibat pada perubahan masalah kepenyakitan. Kini bukan lagi penyakit-penyakit infeksi bakteri yang menular, tetapi penyakit-penyakit yang disebabkan karena begitu baiknya sistem imun kita yang kemudian justru menyebabkan penyakit seperti osteoartritis (OA). Meski OA dapat disebabkan karena masalah mekanis (kegemukan, terlalu berat kerja, terlalu banyak digunakan, dan ketuaan), kini mulai terkuak bahwa OA juga disebabkan karena masalah sistem imun bawaan yang error, yang bukannya melindungi tubuh tetapi justru merusak tubuh, menyebabkan penyakit-penyakit autoinflamasi (bukan autoimun) yang kemudian dikelompokkan sebagai bentuk OA primer. Sayangnya hingga kini menguak masalah autoinflamasi pada OA ini belum selesai, sehingga status OA primer penyebabnya "masih belum diketahui". Padahal OA kini menjadi penyakit kronis terbanyak di dunia, nomor dua setelah hipertensi. Dengan begitu hingga kini, belum ada obatnya, kerusakannya belum bisa disembuhkan dan dipulihkan, sehingga harus disandang seumur hidup, dengan rasa sakit yang terus-menerus, dan gelombang kekambuhan yang meradang. Apabila tidak ditangani dengan baik, hanya akan berujung pada invaliditas. Terutama di tahap-tahap awal perlu mendapatkan bimbingan fisioterapis agar penderita mampu mengelola sendiri kondisi dan nyeri sendinya. Melakukan latihan gerak, olahraga, senam, dan fitnes; serta mampu bertindak apabila terjadi kedaruratan akibat mengalami periode kekambuhan. Buku ini ditulis oleh seorang penyandang OA primer di Belanda, mencoba menjelaskan dari pengalamannya sebagai penyandang, berbagi pengetahuan praktis dan teori yang karena latar belakangnya dari bidang kesehatan, maka teori-teori yang dijelaskan lebih berbasis pada evidence based medicine.
