English summary: This book presents two remarkable women that Paul encountered according to the Gospel of Luke: At Philippi the missionary met the God-fearing Lydia, a seller of purple. The Jewish queen Berenice, who came to fame as the mistress of the Roman emperor Titus, witnessed a speech given by the Apostle at the time of his imprisonment in Caesarea maritima. A look at the report by Luke and at non-biblical literary and epigraphic sources illuminates the two women's different ways of life and shows their divergent attitude towards the Gospel. Lydia's decision to embrace the new religion and Berenice's lack of interest in Paul's message demonstrate exemplarily the attraction the Christian faith had for women in the first century.
