Excerpt from M. Botta's Letters on the Discoveries at Nineveh Major H. C. Rawlinson, C. B. (political Agent, Turkish Arabia, also H. M. Consul at Baghdad.) Babylon and Persepolis, page 182. Mr. Rich describes the specimens of that very curious and primitive system of writing found only in the Babylonian monuments, and those of Persia in the days of its history. The cuneiform, or, as it has sometimes been called, the arrow-headed character, hamed the ingenuity of the decipherer, till Dr. Gbotefend, of Frankfort, undeterred by the ill success of his predecessors, applied himself to the task with a judgment and resolution which secured success. The result, so creditable to his industry and learning, and the process by which he obtained it, he very ingenuously submits to the public. In recent years the intersections between art history and archaeology have become the focus of critical analysis by both disciplines. Contemporary sculpture has played a key role in this dialogue. These essays by art historians, archaeologists and artists, take the intersection between sculpture and archaeology as the prelude for analysis, examining the metaphorical and conceptual role of archaeology as subject matter for sculptors, and the significance of sculpture as a three-dimensional medium for exploring historical attitudes to archaeology.

The Legacy Of Mesopotamia written by Stephanie Dalley and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with History categories.

Influence from Mesopotamia on adjacent civilizations has often been proposed on the basis of scattered similarities. For the first time a wide-ranging assessment from 3000 BC to the Middle Ages investigates how similarities arose in Egypt, Palestine, Anatolia, and Greece. The development of writing for accountancy, astronomy, devination, and belles lettres emanated from Mesopotamians who took their academic traditions into countries beyond their political control. Each country soon transformed what it received into its own, individual culture. When cuneiform writing disappeared, Babylonian cults and literature, now in Aramaic and Greek, flourished during the Roman Empire. The Manichaeans adapted the old traditions which then perished under persecution, but traces persist in Hermetic works, court narratives and romances, and in the Arabian Nights. When ancient Mesopotamia was rediscovered in the last century, British scholars were at the forefront of international research. Public excitement has been reflected in pictures and poems, films and fashion.
