Pluralisme adalah sebuah kerangka di mana ada interaksi beberapa kelompok yang menunjukkan rasa saling menghormati dan toleran satu sama lain. Mereka hidup bersama (koeksistensi) serta membuahkan hasil tanpa adanya konflik asimilasi. Dalam permasalahan ini, manusia diberikan kebebasan untuk memilih jalannya sendiri tatkala telah dijelaskan, mana yang baik dan mana yang buruk, mana yang terpuji dan mana yang tercela. Issue pluralisme dan multikulturalisme di Indonesia semakin mengemuka setelah terjadinya Reformasi di awal tahun 1998, yang ditandai dengan euforia keterbukaan dan kebebasan di berbagai bidang kehidupan di Indonesia terlebih di bidang politik dan sosial budaya. Pluralisme dan multikulturalisme tak lain adalah sebagai salah satu bentuk pengejawantahan semboyan “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika”, berbeda-beda namun dalam satu kesatuan. Pluralisme dan multikulturalisme menjadi suatu keniscayaan yang harus ada di tengah-tengah masyarakat Indonesia yang memang demikian adanya. Dengan demikian, pluralisme dan multikulturalisme dipahami secara logis dan proporsional dalam persepektif positif-prospektif-optimistik, bukan apriori-dogmatik-emosional-pesimistik, sehingga kehadirannya bukan sebagai ancaman maupun perusak entitas kebenaran, kebebasan dan kerukunan hidup beragama, akan tetapi justru sebagai penguat entitas kebenaran, kebebasan dan perlindungan beragama bagi para pemeluknya.
