Alphonse de Lamartine (nom complet : Alphonse Marie Louis de Prat de Lamartine), né à Mâcon le 21 octobre 1790 et mort à Paris le 28 février 1869 est un poète, romancier, dramaturge et prosateur en même temps qu'un homme politique français qui participa à la Révolution de février 1848 et proclama la Deuxième République. Il est l'une des grandes figures du romantisme en France.Alphonse de Lamartine passe son enfance en Bourgogne du sud, en particulier à Milly, qui nourrira son inspiration poétique, et se forme au collège à Lyon puis à Belley avant de revenir dans le Mâconnais où il mène une vie de jeune homme oisif et séducteur. Il voyage en Italie et occupe une éphémère fonction militaire auprès de Louis XVIII. En octobre 1816, en cure à Aix-les-Bains, la rencontre avec une jeune femme mariée, Julie Charles, marque un tournant décisif dans la vie du poète mais leur histoire d'amour passionnée vire à la tragédie lorsque Julie, restée à Paris, meurt en décembre 1817. Alphonse de Lamartine écrit alors les poèmes des Méditations dont le recueil est publié en 1820 et obtient un succès fulgurant. Il épouse la même année Marianne-Elisa Birch, une jeune Anglaise, et occupe des fonctions de secrétaire d'ambassade en Italie avant de démissionner en 1830. Il publie durant cette période d'autres oeuvres poétiques comme, en 1823, les Nouvelles Méditations poétiques et La Mort de Socrate, ou encore, en juin 1830, les Harmonies poétiques et religieuses après avoir été élu à l'Académie française en 1829.Méditations poétiques est un recueil de poèmes de Lamartine, publié en 1820.Les débuts de Lamartine dans la poésie, débuts de la poésie romantique dans la littérature française, furent un succès. Après la poésie sensuelle ou jugée trop conventionnelle des derniers classiques, on fut surpris et charmés d'entendre un poète osant être à la fois ému et sincère, faisant preuve d'une profonde mélancolie, élégiaque et douce. La forme des Méditations, fluide et homogène, atteint grâce aux sentiments forts et profonds du poète, une harmonie novatrice, comblant dès lors la déficience du romantisme en matière de poésie.[réf. nécessaire] Ce recueil, tiré à 500 exemplaires le 11 mars 1820, contient des poèmes composés entre 1815 et 1820, dont : "Le Lac", "L'Isolement", "Le Soir", "Le Vallon", "Le Golfe de Baya" et "L'Automne".La première édition comportait 24 poèmes. D'autres éditions suivirent ; celle de 1849 comportait alors 41 poèmes. Ce recueil est l'aboutissement d'un courant de poésie élégiaque caractérisé par des allusions mythologiques, des exclamations, des interrogations et des périphrases poétiques. Il fait l'effet d'une révolution car son fond est nouveau : les poèmes se fondent sur l'expression d'un lyrisme tout personnel, qu'exaltent les moments tristes ou heureux de la vie du jeune poète.Le recueil est marqué par les soupirs de l'âme de Lamartine, qui évoque les souvenirs et les regrets, les espérances et les désespoirs, l'angoisse face à la mort. Mais ces élans de l'âme sont inséparables du sentiment de la nature amie, à qui le poète confie ses joies et ses peines. L'évocation des paysages naturels est l'expression de l'état d'âme du poète lui-même, avec notamment les motifs récurrents du lac et du vallon (ce dernier rappelant à Lamartine la sûreté et la douceur de son enfance et de la demeure paternelle).Lamartine essaye aussi d'exprimer son rapport à l'au-delà. Bien que profondément chrétien, il n'a pas de certitudes exactes, ce qui le pousse parfois à douter, mais finalement, l'espérance envers l'immortalité triomphe.
