Die gegenwärtigen Entwicklungen des globalen Marktes haben die Anforderungen an die Unternehmer nachhaltig verändert. Zur Sicherung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit ist ein entscheidender Wandel im Hinblick auf mehr Flexibilität, Innovationen und Optimierung der Produkte, der Arbeitsprozesse und der Kostenstruktur unausweichlich. Im Zuge der Globalisierung erkannten viele Unternehmer, dass Veränderungen in der Fertigung allein auf Dauer die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit auf dem globalen Markt nicht ausreichend verbessern können. Deshalb stehen insbesondere die Perso-nalkosten im Fokus, weil die Ausgabenseite der Bilanz vieler Unternehmen enorm von dieser Determinante beeinflusst wird. Angesichts dessen entscheiden sich viele Arbeitgeber , diesen Kostenfaktor und damit die Entlohnung der einzelnen Arbeitnehmer leistungsbezogen und flexibel an die aktuelle wirtschaftliche Lage, die durch plötzliche Auftragsrückgänge oder branchenweite Abwärtstrends der Ertragslage gekennzeichnet sein kann, anzupassen. Diese Möglichkeit der Flexibilisierung kann über den Erfolg oder gar den Fortbestand des Unternehmens entscheiden. Die variable bzw. leistungsbezogene Entlohnung ist nicht neu und hat bei gewerblichen Arbeitnehmern, aber auch in der Manager-Entlohnung lange Tradition. In vielen Angestelltenbereichen blieb da-gegen die Vergütung anforderungsorientiert, da die allgemeine Auffassung vorherrschte, geistige Arbeit sei nicht messbar. Mit der Technisierung im Verwaltungsbereich ergaben sich allerdings Möglichkeiten, individuelle Leistungen auch im Angestelltenbereich nachzuvollziehen, um das vorherrschende Leistungsprinzip zu verankern. Die Leistungsentlohnung wird derzeit in vielen mittelständischen und großen Unternehmen insbesondere für den kaufmännischen Angestelltenbereich kontrovers diskutiert. Feste Vergütungskomponenten sollen in variable umgewandelt und die Entlohnung insgesamt stärker nach Leistung differenziert werden. Dabei werden die Bewertungsmerkmale im Angestelltenbereich wie die Termintreue, die Budgeteinhaltung oder die erfolgreiche Durchführung eines Projekts zunehmend als Ziele zwischen Vorgesetztem und Mitarbeiter im Rahmen einer Zielvereinbarung formuliert. This book provides an overview on the major findings of a questionnaire survey of academic profession in international perspective. More than 25,000 professors and junior staff at universities and other institutions of higher education at almost 20 countries from all over the world provide information on their working situation, their views and activities. The study “The Changing Academic Profession” is the second major study of its kind, and changes of views and activities are presented through a comparison of the findings with those of the earlier study undertaken in the early 1990s. Major themes are the academics’ perception of their societal and institutional environments, the views on the major tasks of teaching, research and services, their professional preferences and actual activities, their career, their perceived influence and their overall job satisfaction. Emphasis is placed on the influence of recent changes in higher education: the internationalisation and globalisation, the increasing expectation to provide evidence of the relevance of academic work, and finally the growing power of management at higher education institutions. Overall, the academics surveyed show that worldwide discourses and trends in higher education put their mark on the academic profession, but differences by country continue to be noteworthy. Academics consider themselves to be more strongly exposed to mechanism of regulations, incentives and sanctions as well as various assessments than in the past; yet their own freedom, and responsibilities and influence shape their identity more strongly and are reflected in widespread professional satisfaction.

While there are many strategies for improving the educational process, we need a way to find out what works and what doesn't work as well. Educational assessment seeks to determine just how well students are learning and is an integral part of our quest for improved education. The nation is pinning greater expectations on educational assessment than ever before. We look to these assessment tools when documenting whether students and institutions are truly meeting education goals. But we must stop and ask a crucial question: What kind of assessment is most effective? At a time when traditional testing is subject to increasing criticism, research suggests that new, exciting approaches to assessment may be on the horizon. Advances in the sciences of how people learn and how to measure such learning offer the hope of developing new kinds of assessments-assessments that help students succeed in school by making as clear as possible the nature of their accomplishments and the progress of their learning. Knowing What Students Know essentially explains how expanding knowledge in the scientific fields of human learning and educational measurement can form the foundations of an improved approach to assessment. These advances suggest ways that the targets of assessment-what students know and how well they know it-as well as the methods used to make inferences about student learning can be made more valid and instructionally useful.
