die Untersuchung nimmt ihren Ausgang bei einigen religionsphilosophischen Schriften des jungen Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, den sogenannten Rettungen von 1754. Diese Texte sind der Gruppe der in der Frühen Neuzeit äußerst erfolgreichen gelehrten literarischen Polemik zuzurechnen, die gemessen an ihrer Bedeutung und ihrem Einfluss - auch für die Poesie der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts - bislang von der Forschung kaum zur Kenntnis genommen wurden. Durch die Rekonstruktion einer Gattungstradition wird ein für die Rettungen und Apologien im Allgemeinen und zusätzlich für Lessing im Speziellen typisch werdender ‚Denkstil‘ freigelegt, der sich aus der Tradition erklären lässt, sich aber nicht in ihr erschöpft. In einer den geistesgeschichtlichen Kontext und die ideengeschichtlichen Voraussetzungen berücksichtigenden Kommentierung der Lessingschen Frühschriften gelingt es, einen Modus der Aneignung gelehrten Wissens herauszuarbeiten, der sich den nur scheinbar überkommenen Techniken gelehrt-humanistischer Barockliteratur verdankt. Was in der Arbeit am Beispiel Lessings, der gelehrte Auseinandersetzung und literarische Produktion anschaulich in einer Person vereint, demonstriert wurde, darf Anspruch auf Verallgemeinerung über weite Strecken des 18. Jahrhunderts erheben.

Da Anonymität Kommunikation ermöglicht, die sich jedweder Kontrolle entzieht, betrifft anonymes Kommunizieren auch immer Fragen der Verantwortlichkeit und Zuverlässigkeit. Die Analyse zeigt, dass anonyme Kommunikation sich nicht einfach normativ begründen lässt, weil sie – damals wie heute – sehr gegensätzliche Werte schützt oder auch angreift.

The conventional view of Aristophanes bristles with problems. Important testimony for Alcibiades’ paramount role in comedy is consistently disregarded, and the tradition that “masks were made to look like the komodoumenoi, so that before an actor spoke a word, the audience would recognize who was being attacked” is hardly ever invoked. If these testimonia are taken into account, a fascinating picture emerges, where the komodoumenoi are based on the Periclean household: older characters on Pericles himself, younger on Alcibiades. Aspasia, Pericles’ mistress, and Hipparete, Alcibiades’ wife, lie behind many female characters, and Alcibiades’ ambiguous sexuality also allows him to be shown on the stage as a woman, notably as Lysistrata. There is a substantial overlap between the anecdotal tradition relating to the historical figures and the plotting of Aristophanes’ plays. This extends to speech patterns, where Alcibiades’ speech defect is lampooned. Aristophanes is consistently critical of Alcibiades’ mercurial politics, and his works can also be seen to have served as an aide-mémoire for Thucydides and Xenophon. If the argument presented here is correct, then much current scholarship on Aristophanes can be set aside.
