La réflexion sur le rapport que le présent entretient avec le passé doit prendre en compte les structures socioculturelles de l'époque présente dans la reconstitution du passé et, réciproquement, considérer les conséquences de la présence consciente du passé dans le présent. La mémoire des crimes politiques se construit souvent sur des omissions sélectives, voire une amnésie collective. Le difficile surgissement de la mémoire peut être lié aux pactes tacites d'oubli après les dictatures et/ou au refoulement traumatique. Mais il arrive que des victimes, des témoins, leurs descendants brisent les tabous et transmettent des récits alternatifs. Comment et à quelle fin les écrivains et les artistes s'emparent-ils alors de ces histoires enfouies pour les diffuser auprès du public ? Quels sont à cet égard les ressorts et les modalités de l'évolution des opinions publiques et des politiques mémorielles des Etats ? La confrontation avec le passé oublié ou refoulé apporte-t-elle un apaisement ? La mémoire est-elle réparatrice ou est-ce le temps qui guérit les blessures une fois que les conflits à l'origine des crimes ne constituent plus d'enjeux dans un contexte sociopolitique renouvelé ?
