Weltkrieg, Note: Magna cum laude, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Institut fuer Bayerische Geschichte und vergleichende Landesgeschichte), Veranstaltung: Promotionsstudium, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Muenchen hatte in den Jahren 1942 bis 1945 mehr als 70 Angriffe durch englische und amerikanische Bomberverbaende durchzustehen, mehr als 6000 Menschen starben im Feuer und in den Truemmern. Die Autorin geht in dieser Untersuchung den verschiedenen strategischen und taktischen Konzeptionen der Englaender und Amerikaner nach, die zu der massivsten Verwuestung der bayerischen Metropole in ihrer Geschichte fuehrten. Gemessen an dem Ausmaß und der Schwere der Luftangriffe, darunter immerhin 30 Großangriffe, erweisen sich die Personenverlust als erstaunlich “niedrig”, wenn auch angesichts der betroffenen Einzelschicksale, derartige Bewertungen nicht angebracht sind. Die damals von ihrer bebauten Fläche und Einwohnerzahl vergleichbare Stadt Köln hatte zum Beispiel 20 000 Luftkriegsopfer zu beklagen. Als sich ab Juli 1944 der Luftkrieg für München intensivierte, waren die Evakuierungen ins bayerische Umland bereits voll im Gange. Gleichzeitig stiegen die Erfahrungen der Münchener Bevölkerung in der Bewältigung der Luftangriffe und sie übte „luftschutzgerechtes Verhalten“. Eine noch entscheidendere Rolle spielte jedoch der Umstand, dass einige von Planung und Stärke potentiell katastrophale Angriffe mit Feuersturmgefahr in der Praxis aus Wettergründen oder durch Pannen der Angreifer nicht die volle Wirkung entfalteten, so im Dezember 1942, im April 1944 und im Januar 1945. Die Verluste der beteiligten alliierten Luftstreitkräfte waren ebenfalls schmerzlich: 274 Maschinen kehrten von ihren Operationen gegen München nicht zurück. Dabei verloren die Briten 79 Bomber und insgesamt 553 Soldaten, die 8. USAAF 123 Maschinen und etwa 1230 Mann sowie die 15. USAAF 72 Kampfflugzeuge mit rund 720 Angehörige fliegenden Personals. Damit verloren die Westalliierten bei ihren Angriffen auf München etwa 2500 Soldaten, die entweder getötet, gefangengenommen oder vermisst wurden. Die urbanen Strukturen in München wurden durch die Zerstörung aus der Luft schwer getroffen: Wohnraum, Kulturbauten und Infrastruktur. Besonders empfindlich traf die ohnehin stets an Wohnungsmangel leidende Stadt die Massenzerstörung von Wohnungen mit zahllosen binnen weniger Stunden auf der Straße stehenden Obdachlosen. Insgesamt 82 000 Wohnungen fielen den Bomben zum Opfer.
