Maßnahmen, dem Verkehr Raum zu schaffen, reichen freilich lange zurück: Schon die Erweiterung der Zufahrt am "Karls Thor" 1791/92 geschah, weil schwere Fuhrwerke die Enge nicht mehr passieren konnten. Ebenso wurden Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts im expandierenden München Gassen zu Straßen, bevor in der NS-Zeit Straßenverbreiterungen und auch Durchbrüche entstanden, die bis heute das Stadtbild mitprägen.
